Titanic 3D Review - A Trip Down Memory Lane
Reviewing "Titanic 3D" from 20th Century Fox starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Also directed by James Cameron.
So its been 15 years ever since the world first got its taste of the magic and the tragedy of the RMS Titanic as done beautifully by director James Cameron. And now with the the centennial of the Titanic tragedy, 20th Century Fox together with Cameron himself is reinventing the classic tale of Jack Dawson and Rose Dewitt Bukater for a new audience by converting the film into full stereoscopic 3D.
So what's the verdict on this one? I give this a perfect 10. Just like what I would have it given it back during its original theatrical run in 1997. Nothings changed. There were no re-edits and everything that made it an Academy Award Winning film remains the same. In fact, the addition of 3D made it more appealing.
I wasn't blogging around 1997 so there was no possible way that I would've written or posted a review for Titanic but this re-released 3D version definitely gave me a solid reason to do so. I have nothing but good things to say about Titanic 3D.
UNTAMPERED
One of the great things about watching Titanic on 3D on the big screen again is that it tells a love story, a tragedy and a tragic love story all in one sitting. It's got a lot of money shot moments often when we join Kate Winslet's Rose as she looks down on the icy cold Atlantic water the night she planned on killing herself by jumping overboard. When Jack Dawson screamed "I'm the king of the world" for the first time we were definitely awe-struck.
Now watching "Titanic 3D" and seeing these two scenes will not just make you go "awwwww". It will definitely make you feel like you were part of the scene or part of the environment. Heck, just that scene where Jack looks down at the stern of the RMS Titanic with the water splashing and the dolphins swimming around will make you feel like you really were looking down.
More importantly nothing was removed, nothing was added making it an untampered masterpiece. When you take your seat, you're going to see the movie you might have seen 15 years ago. Which in turn will bring you nostalgia (I know it did that to me.).
UNSINKABLE
It raked in a huge number of ticket sales not just in America but around the world and it made Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, James Cameron and even Celine Dion into household names. Now this movie is back and bigger than ever. One good thing about this release is the fact that it will introduce this story to new movie goers like the teenagers today. To the 13 year olds and 15 year olds who were practically toddlers at the time and even to the people who watched the movie like 20 times during the original run, no body can pass up the chance to see this in the big screen.
DRAMATIC
The drama parts on Titanic are still effective in my opinion. We watched the movie last night and during Jack's dying scene (where they were floating on the flotsam and jetsam), I could certainly hear some sobs and there were even viewers who sounded like they were crying.
Pardon the language, but FUCK! Even after more than a decade, this scene was so much a sob story. I mean, it was a punch in the gut to see Jack die after everything they went through.
Also on the video on top, you would actually see a young Ioan Gruffud. Yes, the same actor who years later nabs the role of Mr. Fantastic for the live action adaptation of Marvel's Fantastic Four. (Thanks to Ms. Mae for that little tidbit; I had my suspicions but wasn't sure).
OVERALL VERDICT
Titanic 3D is definitely a good movie to catch especially if you plan on going to the mall this Holy Week 2012. It's a classic that you should watch and let your kids watch (provided they are at least 13 years of age).
It's a movie that has a heart and packs a punch. It's also a film that will let you realize that you should always follow your heart and that women can hold an ocean in their hearts. Which might be a bad thing for men. Tee-hee. I'm just teasing.
Speaking of Titanic Products, Entertainment Earth is selling some neat looking products to celebrate the release of Titanic 3D and commemorate the sinking of the infamous unsinkable ship 100 years ago.
