I have to admit that although I kinda like it there are some elements that I miss from the old costume. And some elements from the old costume that made him look cooler.
Here's what I think... The new costume looks great because it borrowed a lot of things from the Hollywood version which was Captain America: The First Avenger. In the film we see Chris Evans wear a uniform that had jackboots and a helmet with a tinge of suspender lovin'.
What's great is that its not just suspenders and all that. We also get to see some chainmail (which is standard for the comic book version of Cap) melded with the boot design we see him wearing in Marvel's The Avengers.
I also liked the addition of the stars on both sides of his shoulders which also signifies some similarities with the Ultimate Comics version of Captain America.
Some of the things I don't like about the new suit:
- It has too much pouches. Is this the 90s again?
- It has knee pads. Please refer to my secondary question again.
- What's with all the tubing? (I mean yeah, Marvel is totally emulating DC Comics' in terms of relaunching key titles and books but emulating the tubings we see Batman, Superman and the rest of the Justice League are wearing in their new costumes is a bit too much don't you think?)
If you check figure # 2 (by Jerome Opena) you'd also see that the pants area is much more cleaner as compared to the first design which had too many unnecessary pads and harnesses and straps. From a creator's POV the straps and padding are necessary for Cap but it looks too much for him don't you think? There's also the idea of mobility. I mean if you look at it, Cap would barely be able to run and dodge with those things getting in the way.
Glad they didn't push through with design # 1 (hopefully I'm right)...
The image you're seeing below comes from artist John Cassaday
Yes JC is definitley back to do another high profile Marvel book. He also gets to draw Cap this time (If I'm not mistaken he drew covers for Captain America a few years ago)...
You know what, rather than diss the art, I'd say that this was just a subtle upgrade from what Cap's been wearing through the decades. The kneepads are still there but the bucanneer boots have finally said goodbye.
Overall, I'm getting the book regardless of who draws it. It's mainly out of curiosity and partly because if everything goes wrong for Marvel and they really did screw up with this decision, I can write and diss them over and over again.
Oh and maybe because I love the writing approach that Rick Remender delivers month in and month out for stuff like Uncanny X-Force and Secret Avengers.
