Nova # 1 Spoilers and Review

Some details and minor spoilers for Nova # 1 by Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuiness

In this issue, we find out the following things:

  • Sam Alexander is the son of Jesse Alexander an Earthman 'Black' Nova centurion.

  • Sam's dad has been stuck on Earth for 15 years after his team mates never returned for him. It's probably going to be a plot somewhere in the next few issues.
  • The first few pages features Jesse and the rest of his crew springing out Rocket Raccoon and Gamorra from a Badoon prison approximately 15 years ago. (Which doesn't make sense at all because the Guardians of the Galaxy have only been operating together around give or take five years).
  • Sam's dad mysteriously disappear which leaves Sam very, very upset leading to his accident.
  • The final page features Sam meeting Rocket and Gamorra after they pay him a visit at the hospital.
I'm giving Nova a whole lot of chance mainly because I like the concept. Sure this isn't Richard Rider (and here I was hoping that this Sam Alexander kid would happen to be Richard Rider's long lost son or something) but it's still fresh and fun. The way I described the series to my friend Norby (writer of Prologue, Gutom) is it's a Peter Parker-ization of Nova.

MgGuiness' art will always rank high in my book. Regardless of who he works with, there's just something about this guys art that makes me want to stare at it longer than other artists (with the exception perhaps of Jim Lee).
