Steampunk Snow White # 1 Review

Rod Espinosa serves up another tale of bravery, love and a bit of steampunk with his latest opus Steampunk Snow White # 1 for Antarctic Press. Special thanks to Comicx Hub and Castle Geek.

I believe that Snow White is Rod Espinosa’s way of upping the ante in terms of his work. The lines are beautiful, the fight scenes dynamic and it’s a great reinterpretation of the classic Snow White story. It’d be a real shame if you don’t pick up the book especially in it’s limited initial print run.

There's a lot of things to like about this new book from Espinosa. First we're not seeing a damsel in distress Snow White. She's fully capable of fending for herself if the need arises and there's even a point where she goes full on vigilante. That bit is also an interesting cog thrown into the classic story. Having to see Snow and the mysterious Lone Fox take on an army is a nice change of pace from the standard story we've grown up with. Plus it becomes twice as cool with the art provided by Espinosa.

What's fun about Steampunk Snow White is that there are still traces of Espinosa's other works here and there. It's not really easter eggs but its more of the overall vibe. Reading the stuff, you'll get this hankering for Rod's previous works such as "The Courageous Princess" or "The Prince of Heroes" which I assure you is not a bad thing.

Modern day changes have also been thought of here in the book. You're dealing with poisonous darts ejected by gigantic armored troopers? Turn the seven dwarves into the seven mongoose to make them immune from poison. Want to speed up the 'bonding' process between princess Snow and the seven? Make her go on a training of sorts with each one. That for me is the true strength of "Steampunk Snow White"

If there's any real pitfall with the book it's that it had a limited amount of pages to tell what is really a great story. We never see the love story between Snow White and her prince. It was only implied but never truly explored how the queen became the vile creature that she was and much more. Hell I'd have been willing to see more splash pages of epic battle scenes.

For what's currently available at Comicx Hub i think its a nice score. I'm hardselling it now because it's a really great book and it's also homegrown. Plus if you're in the Makati area on Saturday, you can also have your copy signed by none other than the artist/writer himself Rod Espinosa. More details HERE and HERE

Verdict: 9/10
