George R R Martin's Real Vision for the Iron Throne

A Song of Fire and Ice writer George R.R. Martin is back to blogging on his Livejournal account and his new post focuses on an integral part of his books' mythos, the Iron Throne. 

Here's an excerpt from his livejournal blog:

"The HBO throne has become iconic. And well it might. It's a terrific design, and it has served the show very well. There are replicas and paperweights of it in three different sizes. Everyone knows it. I love it. I have all those replicas right here, sitting on my shelves.

And yet, and yet... it's still not right. It's not the Iron Throne I see when I'm working on THE WINDS OF WINTER. It's not the Iron Throne I want my readers to see. The way the throne is described in the books... HUGE, hulking, black and twisted, with the steep iron stairs in front, the high seat from which the king looks DOWN on everyone in the court... my throne is a hunched beast looming over the throne room, ugly and assymetric...

The HBO throne is none of those things. It's big, yes, but not nearly as big as the one described in the novels. And for good reason. We have a huge throne room set in Belfast, but not nearly huge enough to hold the Iron Throne as I painted it. For that we'd need something much bigger, more like the interior of St. Paul's Cathedral or Westminster Abbey, and no set has that much room. The Book Version of the Iron Throne would not even fit through the doors of the Paint Hall.

So what does the Real Iron Throne look like, you ask? Glad you asked. It looks kind of like this:"

I totally agree with the writer's thoughts. The iron throne after all is made out of the melted swords of the former kings and warriors of the Targaryens. A small throne just doesn't cut it. A huge pile of swords welded together with dragonfire that serves as a throne is fitting for the most powerful political figure in all of Westeros. I loved that comment about kings or at the very least people seated on the Iron Throne are supposed to look down at the subjects. Very bad ass.

Game Of Thrones Season 4 Finds Oberyn Martell aka The Red Viper

More new characters will be joining the cast of HBO's "Game of Thrones" when it returns next season. First in the list of new additions is the Red Viper aka Oberyn Martell which was nabbed by Chilean actor Pedro Pascal.

“This was a tough one,” say showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss about the casting. “The Red Viper is sexy and charming, yet believably dangerous; intensely likable, yet driven by hate. The boys love him, the girls love him, and he loves them all back. Unless your last name is Lannister. We found a fellow who can handle the job description and make it seem effortless. He wasn’t easy to find and he won’t be easy to stop.”

As for me, I'm just waiting for that epic fight between Martell and Sandor Clegane (The Mountain), a personal fight for the viper as it was the bigger Clegane brother who ***SPOILER ALERT**** 

... killed and raped Elia Martell (Oberyn's sister) during the "Sack of King's Landing ...

Oh my gawd! Lena Headey looks so hot playing the baddie and brandishing a dagger. Good times! Then there's also Emilia Clarke, who plays Danaerys Targaryen.

Being that Game of Thrones season 3 will be coming out this month, here's a refresher chart for those who've already forgotten who's who and what's their connection with each other. 

Hopefully by the end of this post, you'll remember your Lannisters from your Starks, differentiate your Greyjoys with your Baratheons and know the wildlings and the Targaryens.

Here's a look at the set of Game of Thrones season 3 featuring the beautiful Emilia Clarke and Kit Harrington playing Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow respectively.

Now I'm wondering why the Mother of Dragons has an army behind her and I remember that this part of "A Song of Fire and Ice" will follow the growth of the Targaryen Khalasar. Meanwhile Snow's still going to held captive by the wildlings from outside of the wall while the White Walkers have begun to amassed outside of the wall.

Game of Thrones Season 2 Review - The Best and the Worst

Just weaning off from Game of Thrones Season 2 addiction. I tell you guys things are really looking great for this series based on writer George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Fire and Ice" saga.

We go back to the seven kingdoms and catch up on where each and everyone of this huge cast is when the S2E1 starts. The Lannisters [including Joffrey, Tyrion and Cersei] are in King's Landing where they should be.

Robb Stark is with his mother Cat Stark are on a campaign Northwards. This is ofcourse a war set due to the public beheading of Robb's dad Eddard "Ned" Stark [Sean Bean]. The Stark's home in the North, Winterfell, is "protected" by Bran Stark while Danaerys Targaryen and her Khalassar are caught in a desert known as the "Red Waste".
