The Counselor Movie Review

The Counselor is one hell of a black cloud of feels. It's got the makings of a great movie although it will probably leave you with a dark cloud over your head; but really that's the fun part!

The movie is directed by Ridley Scott and written by Cormac McCarthy. It stars a powerhouse cast including Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Brad Pitt and Michael Fassbender as the eponymous Counselor.

CAST

The sound acting of Fassbender once again makes this an OK movie. Penelope Cruz was so-so as Fassbender's fiancee. Cameron Diaz plays Malkina, a manipulative she-devil. She actually tried to be this ice cold sex-depraved ice queen but it failed big time. Although she did good with the closing scene. Javier Bardem and Brad Pitt's characters were used as a means of foreshadowing things down the line. Bardem in particular had some really great lines in this flick. As for Pitt, I was like, was he even there?

VISUALS

Be prepared for violence and some nasty stuff. Hey we're in Mexico and things can really be like that (the same can be said for Manila too). The Counselor's got a lot of savagery AND beauty mixed in it. I wouldn't call the ageing Cameron Diaz as a real beauty but she's still visually appealing. Penelope Cruz on the other hand is still... well... HOT DAMN. I like the scenery and how it changes from squalid and dirty to super modern and posh. 

DIALOGUE

Chalk it up to the film having been developed and conceptualized by Cormac McCarthy so expect to have awesome dialogue. The fun thing here is that you could probably make some of those dialogues into life lessons.

VERDICT:

Seriously, I wanted to love THE COUNSELOR but that horrible, bleak ending just turned me off. This is also the reason why it took me a while before I even published this review. It's going to leave a mark on you; despite what the main drive is about moving on and accepting what fate has offered it still really leaves a sour note.

Stellar Cast as Damaged Goods in "The Counselor"

Probably this year’s jaw-dropping crime thriller so far, “The Counselor” is both an amazing and devastating cautionary tale about greed helmed by no less than Academy-Award nominee director/producer Ridley Scott (“Alien,” Black Hawk Down,” “Prometheus,” “Hannibal”) and written by Pulitzer-Prize winner Cormac McCarthy who recent novels “All The Pretty Horses,” “No Country for Old Men,” “The Road” and “Child of God” have all been made into acclaimed major motion pictures.

Filled with a sterling cast headed by Michael Fassbender in the titular role, “The Counselor” also stars Academy-Award winning couple Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz along with acclaimed blockbuster stars Brad Pitt and Cameron Diaz.

The movie introduces us to The Counselor, played by Fassbender who is seduced by the high life of sophisticated crime when he decides to cross the line and dabble in one illicit drug deal. It is a contemporary thriller about the terrible consequences for an American lawyer who, tempted by the lure of quick money, gets involved in a drug deal that leads right to the heart of the ruthless Mexican drug cartels.



The eponymous Counselor – we never know his name – gets in deeper and deeper as the stakes get higher and the bodies start to pile up. Fassbender stars asthe Counselor and Cruz plays his beautiful girlfriend, Laura. Bardem plays a drug dealer, Reiner, and Pitt stars as Westray, a middleman in the proposed deal. Diaz is the exotic, and highly dangerous, Malkina.

“It was so well written, sophisticated and balanced, and while there’s a lot of information there, Cormac had left enough space for an actor to fill it in,” says Fassbender. “It was just a masterful piece of work.”
He adds: “And I just love working with Ridley. It’s like a master class every day.”



Perhaps The Counselor’s greatest failing is his hubris. “He thinks he’s smarter than he is,” says Fassbender. “He is given enough opportunity to get out of the deal, yet he repeatedly says he’s all right, and he is obviously not all right. There’s a blind arrogance that drives him forward.”

Reteaming with Ridley Scott, who launched his career in “Thelma & Louise,” Pitt brings unbridled charisma to a quirky and unforgettable character. The chance to reunite with Scott and work with a script from a writer he’s long admired was irresistible. “I’m a Cormac McCarthy fan – I mean, I’ve read every word the guy’s published and most of the books more than once.”

Diaz, who shares most of her scenes with Bardem, describes the characters’ complicated relationship: “Malkina has found her sweet spot in Reiner. He is a man who will do anything for her, and of course, she had created that scenario. Ruining people’s lives is a sport for her. It makes her feel alive.”

Intermingled with the titular character’s inexorable path to disaster, is Cormac McCarthy-esque dark humor. “I think there’s humor in everything,” says Scott. “The characters are damaged goods; they’re attractive but they’ve all ducked and dived in their professions,” and that leads to unexpected moments of humor. Adds Steve Schwartz: “These characters could only have come from Cormac. And while they vary in the extent and color of their flaws, they are always fun to watch.”

Cameron Diaz Devours in the Crime Thriller "The Counselor"

Renowned filmmaker Ridley Scott whose genre-defying films such as “Gladiator,” “Black Hawk Down,” “Alien” and “American Gangster” takes the crime-thriller genre a notch higher in his latest movie “The Counselor.”

“The Counselor” brings together a dream cast that includes Michael Fassbender, Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Brad Pitt. The characters co-exist in the dark, tough and merciless world of drug cartel where a lawyer known only as the Counselor (Fassbender) is lured into the excitement, danger and easy-money of drug-trafficking, but finds that his momentary decision leads him on a downward spiral of unstoppable events and fatal consequences. The Counselor finds himself way out of his depth when an unplanned series of events lead to tragic consequences for both him and his fiancée, Laura (Penélope Cruz). Cruz’s real-life husband, Javier Bardem plays Reiner, a larger-than-life nightclub owner who brings The Counselor into the shady deal.

Strong female leads are a Scott hallmark and Cameron Diaz portrays one of the filmmaker’s toughest and darkest characters ever. Diaz brings a rich history of comedic and dramatic work to her portrayal of Malkina, Reiner’s malevolent girlfriend who is sophisticated, sexy and darkly unsettling. She is a sociopath whose lack of empathy means she’s capable of anything. Malkina’s power stems from her relentless drive to take control and possess anything she believes she deserves. Whatever the consequences of her actions, she feels absolutely no remorse.

Diaz who has appeared in almost all film genres, immediately responded to the script of “The Counselor.” “Malkina is extremely smart. She is capable of anything. There is no humanity in Malkina. The two questions she’s always asking herself are: how can I get what I deserve? What do I have coming to me? Nothing else, no one else, is of any concern to her. Malkina is so powerful because she understands the consequences of her actions more than any other character,” says Diaz of her character.

“The only thing she wants is more [of everything],” adds Diaz. “Malkina is compelled to take the power of every man, devour it, and then break down every woman.” Diaz, who shares most of her scenes with Bardem, describes the characters’ complicated relationship: “Malkina has found her sweet spot in Reiner. He is a man who will do anything for her, and of course, she had created that scenario. Inadvertently, he has allowed her to take control of his world, to insert herself amidst his business dealings and take what she believes she deserves. Worse still, she has a good time doing it. Ruining people’s lives is a sport for her. It makes her feel alive. Reiner desperately wants to make her happy but she will never be happy. He will always keep trying, which means she can get whatever she wants, however she wants it and just give him enough to keep coming back.”

Sharing a considerable amount of screen time with a pair of cheetahs, Diaz wore a cheetah tattoo on her back and explains the link: “It’s the purity of the hunter in the cheetah she responds to and indeed loves. The tattoo symbolizes her adoration and admiration for the cheetah because she feels such a kinship she is literally assuming their skin – the skin of the hunter because that’s who she is.”

Diaz made her feature film debut at age 21, captivating moviegoers as femme fatale Tina Carlisle in “The Mask.” She has since starred in more films including “There’s Something About Mary,” “Charlie’s Angels,” “Shrek,” “Vanilla Sky” and “My Best Friend’s Wedding” that have grossed more than $100 million internationally. She also went on to star in such independent films as “ The Last Supper,” “Feeling Minnesota,” opposite Keanu Reeves and Edward Burns’ “She’s the One.”

Revealed are the latest online character posters of “The Counselors” assembled to portray unforgettable characters – damaged goods yet attractive who have all ducked in unexpected moments of thrill and humor.

Michael Fassbender is simply known as The Counselor tempted to try for once an illegal way of amassing a large amount of money instantly. Although he’s received numerous warnings about the potential dangers of getting into this deal, his blind arrogance deafened him of those warnings.

Laura, played by Penélope Cruz is the fiancée of The Counselor. Laura is a beautiful woman whom The Counselor prizes the most. Her intelligence and foresight – and her love for The Counselor – are no match for his descent into the rabbit hole, and they both face tragic consequences if the deal he has made with unseen, powerful forces, goes south.

Javier Bardem takes on the colorful character of Reiner, a nightclub owner who brought The Counselor into the shady deal. Reiner straddles two worlds: the extravagant and decadent realm of a nightclub owner, and the brutal, lawless and merciless criminal underworld that is rapidly closing in on The Counselor, and on Reiner. Reiner appears to possess special insight into The Counselor’s increasingly dire circumstances, but he’s just as much a potential victim of a life he little understands.

Malkina, the toughest and probably the darkest of characters who surrounds The Counselor is played by no other than Cameron Diaz. As Reiner’s malevolent girlfriend, Malkina’s drive is to take control and possess anything she believes she deserves.

Brad Pitt rounds up the cirque of intrigue with his portrayal of Westray, a philosophizing and shady middleman whose warnings to The Counselor about the dangers of a world he seeks to enter go unheeded. Handsome, charming and witty, Westray is also an unapologetic womanizer.

Given the star quality found in this movie, I'm inclined to think that this is going to be a good movie. Plus McCarthy's here so this should be hard-hitting. If you're not aware, Cormac McCarthy also wrote some heavy stuff like the Oscar winning "No Country for Old Men", the beautiful yet gory "The Road" and "All the Pretty Horses".

The Magic Behind the Helmets in Prometheus

In returning to the genre he helped define, Ridley Scott continues to push the boundaries of storytelling, both visually and thematically. As he notes, he’s all about the “everything” – from story structure to casting, from sets and costumes to new ways of telling a story. And while the renowned filmmaker is scaring the hell out of you, he never loses sight of the big picture. “After you’ve seen Prometheus,” Scott concludes, “you will have experienced something completely unexpected.”

In parallel to the film’s post-viewing experience, the actors likewise have undergone a gratifying filming experience with the helmets developed for the film.

Scott mandated a globe-shaped helmet with no blind spots. Each helmet had nine working video screens, lighting, an oxygen supply run on two fans with battery packs within the backpack. The exterior of the helmet features a fully functioning torch and HD cameras with a transmitter and recorder.

The helmet has 9 working LED screens, all with specially designed graphics, five of them in the globe, and the others in the glass. The graphics have all been designed by the art department to look like official tech. It's the seismic activity of the land.

MOVIE REVIEW: Prometheus

20th Century Fox's Prometheus has got to be one of the best sci-fi movies that takes advantage of today's technology. Ridley Scott's return to the world of Aliens is definitely a welcome fresh breath in the genre.

Logan Marshall Green Q&A for Prometheus

Here's a quick Q&A for actor Logan Marshall Green for Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" which will be released locally by 20th Century Fox.

Logan Marshall-Green is known for recurring guest roles on “24” and “The O.C.” In theatre, he's the recipient of a Drama Desk Award for his performance in Neil LaBute's “The Distance From Here.”

His feature film debut came in 2005 with “The Great Raid”, and he portrayed Paco in Julie Taymor's “Across the Universe” in 2007. He can also be seen in “Brooklyn’s Finest,” as Melvin Panton and 2010's “Devil,”, based on a story by M. Night Shyamalan.

On the set of Ridley Scott's PROMETHEUS, Marshall-Green discusses his character Holloway, working with one of sci-fi's greatest pioneers, and the themes of the film.

Q: What can you tell us about your character?
A: I play Charlie Holloway, who is a scientist and the love interest of Elizabeth Shaw, Noomi Rapace’s character. They are a team. If she’s the brains, he’s the legs. I wouldn’t go so far to say muscle, but he’s the legs. He’s the one who leaps before he looks, and sometimes it hurts them as a team but a lot of the times it’s helped them. He takes a lot of chances and so far so good. This mission is one of the chances. The beautiful part is Noomi and I are teamed, but we actually differ in our philosophies as to exactly what we want or what we believe. She’s the believer. I’m the scientist. I’m the skeptic. I’m the atheist, if you will. But we complete each other, for lack of a better word. We make a whole in that sense. I think its what’s drawn the characters together romantically as well. It’s just this kind of respect, full respect but my skepticism matched with her beliefs, her faith.

Closer Look at the Space Jockeys from Prometheus

We've already seen what the Space Jockeys looks like before and after they get their chest ripped out by the baby aliens but what really gets me going with this whole secret mythos regarding these so-called "Engineers" happen to be their looks.

 

Now we really get to see these mysterious humanoids up close as we get treated to two images for these creatures for Ridley Scott's Prometheus. 

 

I'm still curios as to why these guys look like elephants and why were we able to see one Space Jockey during the opening act for "ALIEN" decades ago.
