Before anything else let me go and do a shout out to our friends from 20th Century Fox for the press screening passes. Like their page guys, seriously, you'll thank me for that soon.
So where were we, oh right, I was telling you about the wonders of this movie together with the cast. The film stars Noomi Rapace as Elizabeth Shaw, Logan Marshall Green as Charlie Halloway, Guy Pearce as Peter Weyland, Charlize Theron as Meredith Vickers and Michael Fassbender as David. The film also stars Idris Elba and even Patrick Wilson (Nightowl/ Dan Dreiberg from Zack Snyder's "Watchmen")
The film is set in the near future but the opening of the film alone is set like a million years. Now try as I might, this review might have spoilers but I'll mark it out.
There's a ton of things that I loved about this movie. But the main pull for me would have to be sci-fi aspect. Ridley Scott shows the world once again that he is a master when it comes to aliens, space ships and heroines.
Guys its a must see visual treat especially if you catch the film in IMAX. I'd even better my marbles that its on par with James Cameron's "Avatar" in terms of visuals just like the opening scene.
Here's the rundown of the charming things about PROMETHEUS
- The "suspense" factor is in full effect in this film. Yes there is gore and blood and weird geologists in contorted positions (did I really write that?) but the main "oomph" for Prometheus has got to be the creepy, eerie feeling that's very pronounced. Thanks to the IMAX technology, that feeling of dread and isolation is taken a notch higher and makes it really work. While there are "aliens" in this movie, the writing team (including Damon Lindelof) decided to play more on every person's fear of the unknown rather than fear of the abhorrent or abominable.
- The movie actually made me think on a philosophical level, which I guess was one of the goals of the production team. Things like "how far are you going to go just to find out the truth". I also asked myself sometime during the screening "how will I carry myself if in case my belief is shattered or broken". Its certainly nice for a movie to actually do something of that calibre.
- CHARLIZE THERON! Oh hell yes, I am now calling Charlize Theron the "QUEEN OF COLD HARD BITCHES". She was one mean queen in "Snow White and the Huntsman" and she did it again for Prometheus.
Plus she's also got this bad-ass streak as seen in the first scene we see her in. After waking up from cryo-statis, we see her doing push-ups in her skivvies and bossing Michael Fassbender's David around. Take that Magneto!
- Speaking of David aka Michael Fassbender, he once again shows that he's an amazing actor as he did multiple stuff in this film. We see him as this innocent kid, and then we also see him as a conniving sonuvabitch when he gave Charlie the DNA/ chemical/ serum which creates the xenomorphs. And then we also see him as this kinda nice guy whenever he was swapping lines with Rapace's Shaw.
- Noomi Rapace on the other hand was a bit underwhelming. Emphasis on bit rather than underwhelming. I loved how they were building her character to be the replacement for Sigourney Weaver's Ripley but come on! She looks ridiculous in some scenes, maybe because of her hair. If they plan to do a sequel, you might want to make her look "normal". I guess its really the auburn hair. Aside from that, she was great. I actually felt sorry for her when she had to undergo surgery to take out that alien lifeform growing inside her belly. Plus that stuff was one of the most gruesome scenes in the film. Way to go Lisbeth!
- The other reason why I was anticipating this movie was the Space Jockeys. If you've seen the first Alien film (either on cable or on VHS/DVD/Betamax) you'd probably been scratching your head about the identity of those gigantic beings that Ripley and the rest of her crew upon entering the "Derelict". Well this film tells the story of who those gigantic beings are, what they do, how humans are connected to them and most importantly why did we see that one giant guy with his chest busted.
Well kinda, since this is a soft reboot for the franchise, we don't actually see the dead alien sitting in the pilot's chair. We do see him in Prometheus alive and actually piloting the ship. Thats a bit of a continuity blip that I'd like to point out.

This is what Ripley and the Nostromo crew saw in the original. It was seated in the pilot seat with the chest injury. |
In the new movie we see find out that the Space Jockey (now known officially as "Engineers") clearly died after being impregnated by the giant squid, the squid that developed and was later surgically removed by Elizabeth Shaw.
Overall, PROMETHEUS was a good movie. It's one of the best sci-fi movies that has come in the past two to three years now. Thanks to this film, I'm really psyched for a sequel as we've basically just tapped the surface.
Again, I can't stress enough that the film should be seen in IMAX thanks to all those glorious environment shots and the whole subterranean scenes. You might want to keep your eyes peeled towards the end if you want to get a better look at some of the things to come *wink wink nudge nudge*
VERDICT: 4.5/5
Ride with PROMETHEUS in the speed of light years when it opens June 6 in theaters all over the Philippines – from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros. Visit and like 20thCenturyFoxPh facebook page for more of Prometheus and upcoming films.
It is possible that the Engineer in this movie is not the same space jockey we saw in Alien. There will be another movie that will connect prometheus and Alien so let's reserve that continuity flux for the meantime.
