Avengers vs X-Men # 5 - Five Mutants Become the Phoenix

Marvel wasn't kidding when they showed the cover for AvX # 5 featuring three central characters becoming a host for the Phoenix.

We left the AvX # 4 with a handful of X-Men and Avengers getting ready for another battle with Hope Summers and Wolverine getting caught in the middle.

This time its all out war in the blue area of the moon with the fate of young Hope and the rest of the world in the balance. Meanwhile Iron Man and Giant Man work on a new armor that might turn help slow down the Phoenix's descent to Earth.

I loved that the book still showed a lot of gorgeous battles while at the same time moving the story nicely along. See what I mean? Don't let Bendis write the book if you don't want a book filled with talking heads and a dragging pace.

In this issue we find out that:

  • Hope cannot control the Phoenix force (making her the poster girl for teenage "know-it-all-ism"
  • She needs Wolverine to "end it for her"
  • Wolverine obliges

  • While Cyclops disagrees

  • As mentioned earlier, Iron Man and Giant Man are building a new mech that they hope would be able to prevent the Phoenix from reaching Earth. I'm calling the Phoenixbuster Armor
  •  A few minutes before impact, things get bloody as Captain America teams up with Wolverine to take down Cyclops who seems to be hellbent on making sure that the Phoenix bonds with Hope. Logan slashes Scott's chest in the process.

  • Stark comes into contact with the Phoenix and blasts which does more good than bad as it actually rejects Hope as a host and chooses the five X-Men on the moon (Cyclops, Emma Frost, Colossus, Magik and Namor).

  • They take Hope back to Earth and things go from bad to worse for the Avengers...

There was a lot of great moments in this book. What I truly admire about this is the fact that Fraction and company limited the amount of characters being used. Unlike the previous issues where we see dozens of X-Men characters and Avengers characters, we're only seeing like six or seven from each. The rest of the mutants and metas that made an appearance did so in a cameo fashion.

Overall, I like this book. I'm giving this a 5/5.
