The Mighty Thor # 17 Bids Goodbye to Don Blake

I loved the duality of Thor and Donald Blake especially during JMS and Olivier Coipel's run on "Thor". "The Mighty Thor" however reverted the old split personality role back to making Thor his own man again.

Basically what happens is that Amora the Enchantress chops off Blake's head and spawns a sort of monster/ henchman similar to how Skurge once operated. Enchantress returns to Asgard after fighting off the effects of the dream-nightmare creatures from the past few issues.

During the fight Thor encounters the beheaded Donald Blake...

The two proceed to squabble which leaves an opening for The Enchantress to attack...

The usual stuff happens and Amora together with his new minion gets kicked out of Asgardia. Thor strikes a deal with the Mares which will bring about peace and remove them from their exile. Thor requests the collective creatures of the Mares to take care of Donald Blake's head in the meantime.

The issue is quite nice as it also brings to a close the story of that death-metal kid who turned Thor into the Deconsecrator a few issues back.

I really feel bad that they had to do this to Donald Blake, as a long time reader of Thor it felt like the character was really underused. I recently took to reading the last volume of Thor (again citing JMS and Coipel here) and I must say that around that time, Blake was an enjoyable character to follow as much as Thor.

Him being present in Thor's life in one way or another grounded Thor while Blake was the representation of man trying to achieved an elevated existence similar to the gods. Now that Blake is gone, it also makes no sense for Asgardia to stay and co-exist with the residents of Broxton, Oklahoma.

But hey, you know what, this is comic books and nobody stays dead. Characters get written out and returns in one form or another. So I'm guessing pretty soon we'll be seeing Don back as well Thor's daddy Odin.
