So apparently Barbara Gordon has gone through several costumes before settling in the modern costume were accustomed to seeing now. The first costume was actually a cobbled up costume which she "borrowed" from the GCPD during an attempted jailbreak by a thug named Harry X.
She wears the costume partly because of her taking some fancy over the enigma that is the Batman and partly to save the life of their police escort Dwight as well as her little brother James Gordon Jr.
She actually is pretty good in her fight (thanks to the great art by Ed Benes). It's after this fight that Batman first makes contact with Babs.
After this encounter she continues her fight against crime. This is what she looked like at this time:
She wore this until she was officially added to Batman's "family" joining Bruce and Dick...
Of course that is until this happens...
Still pretty weird though because I was really hoping the whole "crippling" thing gets tackled by writer Gail Simone.
If I may add I'd like to point out that the New 52 "old school" costume of Batgirl was very reminiscent of the All Star Batman and Robin Batgirl...
