REVIEW: Darksiders II

Reviewing Darksiders II from THQ...

Real quick here since I just picked up the game for the Xbox 360. I'm breaking down this review into segments which would be based on the elements on the game.

In this sequel we take on the role of Death who is on the mission to save his brother War from punishment after the events of the first Darksiders game. His plan is to resurrect the human race to erase his brother's "crimes".

GRAPHICS

Graphics for Darksiders II is pretty. It's actually gorgeously done and I have to commend the guys from THQ for doing such a great job. Whether you're scaling walls or killing scores of monsters you can bank on seeing glorious and fluid movements. The scenery is also something to comment about. In the opening stage of the game we find Death trekking a tower in an icy mountain while later stages feature forges, steel mills and much more. The texture of the characters' graphics is also pretty.

CHARACTERS

I can't say right now if the game is filled with great looking characters but I'm pretty confident that it really does. This is of course thanks to the design inputs of Joe Madureira who returns to the game. Death looks pretty even if he's exuding the whole "goth rocker" look. You could substitute Death's pants for leather pants and you'll get a rejected KISS member. The other characters like The Makers for example have really sweet looking armor. Plus the weapons are really wicked looking.

MUSIC

The scoring for this flick couldn't be perfect. It's sometimes eerie and sometimes glorious. It can also be mellow. I left the game running for 10 minutes for a quick coffee break and I was really admiring the whole musical score at that point (before fighting War/ Keeper of Secrets)... Really great scoring and much props for the sound mixing thing.

CAMERA

I liked Darksiders 2 until the first time I was required to do a wall run. It could've have been better if the game's camera doesn't give us weird angles. The results were of course disastrous as I kept on falling which also lead to unnecessary time spent getting back up. The camera sucks and it's a bigger villain for me rather than those dreaded Nephilim. If THQ ever plans to develop and publish a third game I'm really hoping that they take care of the camera problems. Either that or I have to change the settings for the camera.

CONTROLS

the good thing about this game is that the controls are fairly simple to grasp. The bad news however is that the default controls are different from what we're all used to. Dodging is the name of the game for Death. There's really no way you can block attacks but what you lack for in blocking it makes up dodging. You can also buy several upgrades to make dodging easier or provide you with dodging attack combos.

VERDICT: 4.5/5
