Movie review for Alex Cross from Solar-UIP starring Tyler Perry and Matthew Fox and directed by Rob Cohen.
The film is your regular detective versus serial criminal story with a good twist and a surprisingly good take by Matthew Fox.
The Good
- Alex Cross is a cool character. He's no Brian Mills (with a specific set of skills) nor is he Sherlock Holmes. He's simply a Detroit special investigation captain, a husband and father. He's got an uncanny knack for telling you all the things you've done and seen based on the small tell-tale signs found all over your body. He's also a muth********ing badass in the film as he is usually seen carrying his weapon of choice, a shotgun.
- Matthew Fox totally owned this flick. He plays the assassin "Picasso" sent in to kill a chosen few but because of the meddling by Cross, he sees a good fight against the ace detective. Physically speaking Fox was always seen as the pretty, roguish guy from "Lost" but seeing him here reminded me of Christian Bale's "The Mechanic"...
Fox goes from the guy playing this...
To a guy who looks like this...
Going back to Fox his character Picasso is a sure winner. In my opinion, his whole maniacal mindgames is what made the movie a lot more interesting. This is a man is a mean man which is a treat to see (never mind that he tortured a woman somewhere in the flick).
- The whole taunting between Picasso and Cross is interesting albeit short. The film would have been better if the two of them taunt each other on more than one occasion. Sadly because of time constraints on the film, it wasn't possible to explore that little tete-a-tete. Plus if you see the film (which is now showing) you'll know that Fox's Picasso moved the taunting by making it personal for Cross.
- Surprisingly, our favorite Frenchman a moustache-less Jean Reno is also present in the film appearing as Picasso's main target. We don't get to see much of the guy nor do we see that heavy French accent we've known to come and love. A rather bad casting call too if you ask me. Mr. Reno's talents could have been used elsewhere.
- Alex Cross abilities as a detective is also a cool aspect in the film. It's not really explored too much in the film which takes a backseat for the other stuff like his compassion for the innocent people as well as his life as a husband and a proud daddy.
Overall, Alex Cross is a nice popcorn muncher. Its got a nice amount of action in it together with heart and a bit of drama. Matthew Fox definitely stole the show with his take as a mysterious assassin who plays mindgames with our protagonist.
Catch "Alex Cross" which is now playing in theaters near you. Special thanks to Solar-UIP for this special invite.
