Keanu Reeves Battles Dragon, Samurai Warriors and Demons in 47 Ronin

Keanu Reeves makes an explosive return to action-adventure in 47 Ronin. After a treacherous warlord kills their master and banishes their kind, 47 leaderless samurai vow to seek vengeance and restore honor to their people. Driven from their homes and dispersed across the land, this band of Ronin must seek the help of Kai (Reeves)—a half-breed they once rejected—as they fight their way across a savage world of mythic beasts, shape-shifting witchcraft and wondrous terrors. Q: What was it about 47 RONIN that made you want to be a part of it?

A: I loved the themes of honor, revenge and sacrifice in the script as well as the tragic love story. I also liked my character, who was an outsider trying to regain honor.

Q: How have you been involved with this project?

IA:  watched 47 RONIN evolve and change with Carl Rinsch, who paid a lot of respect to all the elements that were inspired by Japanese folklore. Being on this journey and collaborating with Carl on the story has been a great experience.

Q: Speaking of Japanese folklore, were you familiar with the legend of the 47 Ronin before working on the film?

A: I was not familiar with the legend, but as soon as I knew about the project, I did my research and read as much as I could about it. This movie is one of those rare examples of something that comes your way and is just so exciting from the beginning.

Q: You play the lead character of Kai. How do you see him?

A: I think of him as an outsider who yearns to be accepted, like an immigrant. He is honorable and a man of nature, which helps ground him. Kai is also a bit cursed, and he is aware of that.

Q: How did you prepare for this role?

A: Looking at the bigger picture, I basically tried to familiarize myself with the source material and thinking about my character’s place in the story. I always thought the tale of the outsider and these Ronin becoming samurai outsiders was universal because all cities and towns and places have these kinds of events and integration problems that happen. I tried to get in touch with who Kai is and how this affected him. I wanted my character to have a dignity and respect towards the world around him and others. I also wanted him to be capable, to be a hunter and a tracker that is connected to nature.

Q: What kind of training did you go through for the role?

A: I was excited to work with the katana, the Japanese long sword. I trained a lot with the expert Tsuyoshi Abe and worked with the stunt teams. Hiroyuki Sanada, who plays Ôishi, also gave me some tips. I did a lot of exercises with the sword and some dieting as well.

Q: Can you briefly talk about the main characters in the story and their relationships with Kai, starting with Lord Asano?

A: Lord Asano is the ruler of Ako. He sort of takes my character under his wing after he has been abandoned and brought up by these Tengu lords, who I think of as monks. I always saw Lord Asano as an enlightened ruler and a paternal figure.

Q: Lord Asano’s right hand is the warrior, Ôishi. How would you explain the relationship between Ôishi and your character?

A: Initially, Ôishi thinks Kai is some kind of a demon, and he grudgingly puts up with him. However, their relationship changes throughout the course of the story. Ôishi asks for Kai’s help to restore the honor of the house of Asano.

Q: You are surrounded by a great Japanese cast. What can you say about Hiroyuki Sanada, who plays Ôishi?

A: I had already seen some of Hiroyuki’s work in the past and knew a bit about him, but meeting him was special because he is such a gentlemen and a movie star on an epic level. Hiroyuki is a master actor, and it was wonderful to work with him.

Q: You also worked with great actors like Tadanobu Asano and Rinko Kikuchi among many others.

A: I had also seen Tadanobu Asano and Rinko Kikuchi’s work before getting involved in the movie. The truth is that everyone was so excited about this story and participating in the world that Carl Rinsch was creating. We all got along very well and felt we were a part of something special.

Q: What is Carl Rinsch like as a director?

A: Carl is very collaborative and passionate. He is amazing with story, but he is also a visionary with great energy and enthusiasm.

Q: Did you enjoy the martial arts and action side of the shoot?

A: I love shooting action and was very excited to be in a samurai film. The fights were tough but fun to do.

Q: Were there any bumps and bruises along the way?

A: As I was working with great professionals, I didn’t get beat up much, although I did hit Hiroyuki Sanada a couple of times by mistake.

Q: The story wouldn’t work without a powerful villain. Here we have Lord Kira, who is aided by a witch and dark magic to obtain his evil goals.

A: Lord Kira and The Witch both made a great couple and I really thought they managed to put their performance between their teeth, as I would say. I think they are wonderful and delicious villains with even a kind of yearning to them, which made them a bit sympathetic.

Q: In what way did you find Lord Kira and The Witch sympathetic?

A: Lord Kira feels underappreciated. The same thing happens to The Witch, who wants to have this earthly love that he is denying her. In a way, they are victimized by their passions. I liked that sophistication, the complexity of both of them being extroverts that go for what they want but are so wounded at the same time.

Q: You have worked on a number of movies with groundbreaking special effects. 47 RONIN combines CGI with practical effects harbored by the detailed sets that were created for the film.

A: Yes, they built such remarkable sets that made you feel you actually were in that world. There was so much that was there! Then, the work they did with the special effects and the creature creation was awesome.

Q: In this case, what do you believe 3D will add to it all?

A: The filmmakers knew they were making a 3D film from the beginning and everything was considered in that regard. I appreciated that they took the time and effort to work on it specifically. It was great to see the care they took with the story and the storytelling.

Q: What should the audience expect from 47 RONIN?

A: The audience should expect a big movie with great themes. I think it is a film that is entertaining but also has an intimacy to the story and the acting that I hope people will enjoy as well. There is action, drama, love and suspense. It has it all!

Chris Pine Versus Mother Russia in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit

KICK-ASS 2 Review (Spoiler Heavy)

Here's my review for KICK-ASS 2 starring Aaron Taylor Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, Christopher Mintz Plasse and Jim Carey. It opens August 14 and is distributed locally by Solar-UIP.

So Kick-Ass 2 has finally reached our shores and I must say that it's definitely a great movie. Much like how Percy Jackson went with their own story, the same thing has happened here in Kick-Ass 2. Rather than sticking word for word from the source material, I could warrant around 80 percent was retained from the second volume of Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.'s seminal title.

Still Kick-Ass 2 is a pretty nifty flick. There's a good amount of teen angst plus bloody battles, out and out beatings and laughs here and there.

Rather than focus more on the life of Kick-Ass and his alter ego Dave Lizewski (played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson) this sequel focuses more on the life of Mindy McCreedy aka Hit-Girl (Chloe Grace Moretz). The angst is present there. Seeing those scenes was like sending me back to the time I first caught "Mean Girls" with a non coke snorting Lindsay Lohan.

It might seem like Johnson is doing anything but he's POV focuses more on the growing 'vigilante' trend that Kick-Ass inspired. Joining Lizewski on his 'quest' for Justice is a rag-tag team of vigilantes who call themselves "Justice Forever" led by Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey). Those segments were fun and all hero-y. Too bad though that it lasted only so long. Still the big 'final battle' gets us our kick for masked vigilantes and caped crusaders.

Massive props to Jim Carrey who seriously fit the role of the Colonel. Too bad though that his role is very, very short much like how Carrey's participation in promoting the film was short-lived.

Christopher Mintz-Plasse brought the laughs in this movie. His "Motherfucker" was spot on. Too bad though that his version of the character came off more as whiny rather than the motherfucking asshole that he really is from the source material.

The great thing about KICK-ASS 2 is the fact that they deliberately took liberties on some places and scenes that might not be OK for the squemish. Some of them include the death of Colonel Stripes and the attack on Night Bitch. *The book portrayed the brutal rape of Kick-Ass' supposed girlfriend Katy as well as the violent shooting in the neighborhood* Those scenes would've unsettled viewers; hell I would get this unsettling feeling if I saw that adapted on the big screen.

The action and dialogue was great, a bit gritty and dirty but it's still great. What would you expect from a  movie entitled "KICK-ASS". Cool moments and a wicked, twisted finale as well. Oh and if you're looking for easter eggs, there's a buttload of them here in the film. Same goes for comic book references. And keep your eyes peeled for the next movie adaptation from Millar's KAPOW COMICS; it'll make an appearance and it's also going to feature one of our great comic book artists.

THE PURGE Review

Reviewing the film THE PURGE starring Ethan Hawke, Lena Headey,Adelaide Kane and directed by James DeMonaco.

It's hard not to love THE PURGE for all it's suspenseful and intelligent storytelling but the film does falter before hitting the finish line. That being said, it's not entirely a bad thing that it did.

In a nutshell, this reality is one where the USA has been reborn after a time of civil unrest. But to get to that stability and crime-free Utopia the so-called "new founding fathers" allows people to 'release the beast' once a year. This of course is called THE PURGE. Ethan Hawke is Jim Sandin, a security system salesman who made it big. He and his family plan on going through the Purge safe in their 'locked down' home but things just go south quickly.

Director James DeMonaco has a winner here with a thought provoking premise, a solid cast and lots and lots of supposedly scary visuals. Sadly the film falters due to a short running time, some missed opportunities and some kinks in the film making process. Case in point, it was never explained how Zoey's boyfriend snuck in. What part of the story did he snuck in?

Ethan Hawke has aged. There's a difference between growing old and aging (with the latter better than the former). He was 'just OK' here in this film. Nothing really stellar. Playing a desperate father might be new to him.

Lena Headey on the other hand was great, especially her motivational change towards the end. She's suddenly channeling Sarah Connor, Queen Gorgo and Queen Cersei in her buttkicking mode by the time the Purge ends. Oh and did I mention that she IS STILL HOT?!?

Special props to Adelaide Kane here. She provides the younger, fresher eye candy in the film what with her abandoned racy scenes. I'd like to point out as well that she's been running around the house (and thusly being absent for majority of the movie) in a SCHOOL GIRL uniform.

And if you're a Power Rangers fan, you'd be happy to know that she was also part of POWER RANGERS RPM playing the role of villain Tenaya 7.

Another raving comment for the leader of the gang of teenagers who invaded the home of the Sandins. Actor Rhys Wakefield was spot on casting here. The dude might not have been a bloodthirsty killer but he could've been.

The dude's looks plus the character itself was just brilliant. Here we have a prepschool guy, probably goes home to his family for the Purge and then goes on and kill homeless dudes for fun. He's polite and a gentleman and with a drop of a hat, kills people that pisses him off. Sadly, it's never explored.

Again, that's what makes me frown with THE PURGE. It's got potential to fight the bigger suspense movies this year but a short TRT (total running time) and under developed storytelling drags it down instead of acting like rocket boosters.

Verdict: 8/10

Tiger Chen goes from stuntman to leading man in 'Man of Tai-Chi"

Keanu Reeves says that he was motivated to direct his first film "Man of Tai-Chi" because the story was close to his heart and vision.

"The origins of the story date back nearly fifteen years, to when martial artist Tiger Chen Hu met Keanu Reeves while working as part of the stunt team for The Matrix. Their friendship developed over the course of the trilogy of films, with Tiger eventually assuming more prominent stunt roles, impressing Reeves with his work ethic and imagination. “I had to do Kung Fu training with Tiger, and he would tell me stories about his Tai Chi master and his unusual training methods,” Reeves recalls today. “That lead to a lot of deeper conversations about the Tao of life, Chi, martial arts, everything.” It was from these initial conversations that the two eventually decided to collaborate on a screen play that would not just feature Tai Chi as a device or excuse for high-octane fight and action sequences, but actually reflect the martial art’s philosophical values within the story.

We decided to work together. And over the years we developed a story that eventually came so close to my heart and my vision that I wanna to direct it. It became a story that I want to tell."

Tiger Chen Hu believes that the character Tiger’s struggle is something that most audience will be able to relate to, even if they have no experience with martial arts or the underlying philosophy of taiji. “It’s easy to get trapped by the idea of money and power,” says Chen Hu. “Young people like money, smoking, drinking, but all that stuff is excess in the world. But you can’t just say, oh, I’m forbidden to know so I will just stay in my temple of purity. If you want to be completely Taoist, you have to go taste that. You have to go through the journey, to see it through, otherwise you aren’t really part of the full life.”

In addition to borrowing his own nickname for the character and collaborating with Reeves and screenwriter Michael G. Cooney on the script, Chen Hu also was happy to lend his own perspective and experience to help flesh out the story. “Tiger is about eighty percent me, my experiences, my personality, I think,” he says today. “Keanu said we don’t have to make another person, we’ll just put you into the story. So it was easy for him to ask me questions like ‘what would you feel like in this situation,’ and I could answer.” These conversations were often held across oceans and continents via video chat, leading to some unusual hours for Tiger to contemplate the fate of his character: “It would be the middle of the night when I would start these calls, and Keanu and Michael would be talking about the story. They’d ask me through the computer, ‘how would you feel’ and I’d answer, and they’d go back to talking and I’d fall asleep on the call. Then, a half hour later, they’d shout ‘Tiger!’ and ask me another question.”

Like his film’s namesake, Chen Hu trained in Tai Chi as a youth before moving on to other forms of martial arts in order to develop himself as a stunt artist and film professional. “Two years before we started filming, I went to another Tai Chi master to specifically train for the role of Tiger,” he recalls. “Tai Chi is a very unique martial art with a different philosophy: you are always trying to use the opponent’s power; you have to wait for the opponent to punch, kick, whatever, to throw power at you, so you can give the power back – you never attack first.”

Because of the complexity of Tai Chi as a martial art, Chen Hu, Reeves, and master fight coordinator Yuen Wo Ping (another Matrix veteran and a legendary fight choreographer and film director) had to ask themselves unusual questions when creating the fight sequences for MAN OF TAI CHI. “I think it’s the first time you have MMA [Mixed Martial Arts] style versus Tai Chi,” says Chen-Hu. “And, of course, we have to make all of the fights different from one another, so it’s not just the same moves over and over. Finally, you also have to tell the story, to live the journey through Tiger.” This would lead Reeves to ask Hu-Chen questions that are unfamiliar to most fighters used to basic stunt fighting: “Keanu would ask me ‘why do you have to kick?’ That’s a hard question to answer….why do you have to throw the punch or the kick now, at this moment.” “The fighting scenes had to express that journey,” adds Reeves. “Where Tiger is emotionally, and that got into the specifics of where you are in your head, what style of martial arts are you fighting, what are you feeling during the fight, and how do you change as a result of this fight? Every scene had to have change and development of the character going into the fight sequences.”

Ultimately, Reeves was very impressed with Chen Hu’s ability to render Tiger not only in terms of martial artistry, but also in terms of emotional vulnerability. “Tiger is a very talented actor,” Reeves avers, noting that even as a stuntman on The Matrix films, he was able to immediately understand the need for playing a character and not just executing the physical moves. “I saw him do some work with Laurence Fishburne, and I could tell that he knew what it took to shoot a scene, to be on a movie set. So acting wasn’t unfamiliar to him; and in terms of the character work, he was so open and committed, and he completely understood the role.” Reeves cites one fight sequence where Hu-Chen’s performance during the shooting forced Reeves to reconsider the way the scene would be shot: “The way he looked at his opponent, I had to change the way we filmed the fight…that came from Tiger’s understanding of the character and the situation, and being alive as an actor. I look forward to see what he’s going to do with his acting in the future.”

For Reeves, it wasn’t simply a matter of guiding Chen Hu, a stunt man largely unused to the demands of a leading man who must carry the emotional weight of the film. He also had to supervise an international crew, most of whom who spoke an unfamiliar language, as well as bring weight and meaning to the role of Donaka Mark, the film’s shadowy antagonist. “One of my feelings about acting and directing at the same time is that as a director, you are really looking outward. You have something internal, an idea, a feeling, and you look outward and you collaborate. As an actor, you have a perspective of the outside but you’re looking at your place in it from this internal perspective. So it’s almost like having two sets of eyes. It was a new world for me, but it was a really great world to explore.”

Despicable Me 2 Review

Here's my take on Despicable Me 2 featuring the voices of Steve Carell, Kristin Wiig, Benjamin Bratt, Miranda Cosgrove, Russell Brand, Ken Jeong and more. The film is directed Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud. Special thanks to Solar-UIP for the invitation.

Despicable Me 2 surpasses the first movie, by how far, maybe by just an inch. The movie sticks to certain elements present in the first movie, then ditches a couple of other stuff and then just throws in a couple of new gears into the cog for good measure.

It's interesting to note that our lead Groo is working under completely different circumstances and not to mention on the opposite side of where he was originally in the first movie. Now he's batting for the side of the angels and it actually spells interesting for me. 

Is it just me or does this movie also have one of the lamest and yet campiest villain in all of animated movie history. Yes I'm talking about the movie's main villain, El Macho. 

The guy's just friggin awesome. He can do the salsa, rides sharks loaded with missiles and much much more. This is one entertaining dude.


The new movie is a fun movie due to a number of things. There's a charming little love story mixed with a bit of espionage action and a lot of adorable little things. And then there were the minions.

I liked how the story for Despicable Me 2 moved from Groo and Lucy working on the field together as partners to their inevitable falling-in. It might have looked a little too forced for some but kids really won't notice that. They did show a hilariously, horrible date between Groo and a woman who's been set up by Groo's friend which was obviously a plot point to get the two closer. I dig that though.

There's a lot of themes that Despicable Me 2 tries to fit inside it's running time. The old themes of family and a change of heart is still here albeit in a stronger form. Groo isn't the evil genius who simply wants to rule the world, he's now a dad who makes sure his little princesses get everything they want. Or at least, he'll be able to provide for them. Dr. Nefario (played by Brit comedian Russell Brand) also dishes out a couple of quips about family.

But for me the real stars of the show would have to be the minions. The first film gave them a handful of scenes where they really get to shine. This time however, they're the centerpiece. And although we barely understand what they're saying, I wouldn't be surprised if I saw you laughing hard at the antics of these little yellow men. Heck, in this movie, they even go and emulate an old irish pub song. And be prepared for the best rendition of "I Swear".



Overall, don't expect something as heavy hitting as Toy Story 3 because this movie and that movie are polar opposites. Do try to enjoy the visuals, the 3D conversion, the in-jokes and the gags that are present in the movie. Sit back and let the minions entertain you; oh and don't forget the kids. 

Verdict: 8.5/10

The Despicable Me 2 Tickets Look Fantastic

Solar-UIP loves to turn out some amazing invites & tickets for their movies. Case in point, the tickets for the film 'Despicable Me 2'.

So basically, each ticket given had pop-up minions in them. It's not obvious at first due to the adhesive stuck at the back but once you pull the ticket back completely, these yellow minions will really pop out.

New Poster for Brad Pitt's World War Z

A new World War Z poster just popped out and I can say that its really generic, unlike the last poster with just the film's star Brad Pitt.

Currently this posters available only on lo-res. Hopefully I get to encounter a hi-res version of this. Here's the synopsis as well:

With the 20th anniversary of one of Universal Pictures’ most enduring hits approaching, the studio decided to reissue the film in theaters across the world, approaching theater owners with the idea of a 3D post-conversion for one of Universal’s favorite adventures, stunningly restored in 4K.

Manila chosen to host the Philippines's Fast and The Furious 6 Premier

The Philippines continues to capture Hollywood's, interest, as Manila will play host to Universal Pictures' upcoming 'Fast & Furious 6', it was announced today. This event is the very first time that Manila will gather foreign press from Asia and other cities outside of the region to promote a major Hollywood movie.

The film's lead action star, Vin Diesel, along with fellow stars Michelle Rodriguez, Gina Carrano and Luke Evans, producer Neal H. Moritz, director Justin Lin will be coming to the Philippines to be part of this exciting movie event. During the two-day event , invited journalist will have a chance to conduct one-on-one interviews with the cast and director. This will culminate with a star-studded premier of Fast & Furious 6 at the SM Mall of Asia on May 15, 2013.

Brad Pitt is in for some serious trouble when he squares off against the zombie horde in Paramount's 'World War Z' which is an adaptation of the book of the same title written by Max Brook. 

Synopsis: The story revolves around United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself.

The Second Trailer for Despicable Me 2 Gives More Details

The second trailer for Despicable Me 2 finally gives us an idea about what the story really is. It looks like Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) is being drafted to an anti-evil genius organization as he knows he a mad scientist thinks, mainly because he is technically still one. I'll let the trailer do the talking.
