First of all, a big 'thank you' once again to Solar Entertainment for the invitation to see this awesome movie in advance.
THE GOOD
- The movie is beautiful to look at. There's something wrong about going 'wow' at the ruins of a city that was once New York. The magic gets doubled thanks to the IMAX technology that makes things larger than life. Major props to the visual effects team who did the landscape.
- Tom Cruise works his magic again here playing the role of a Jack Harper a drone repairman stationed on Earth. Leave it to the Top Gun star to look good even if he's in a tight situation. The guy does sport a pretty mean looking gruff look for the majority of the feature film.
- There's a cool plot twist here that people may or may not have seen. I'm actually pretty impressed with that plot twist. I'd like to spoil it, but it'd be more fun if you saw the film for yourself and go 'nice one'.
- The design for everything in the movie looks sweet. Cruise's gear when he does his fieldwork is very reminiscent of the clothes that Commander Shepard of Mass Effect is seen wearing. Everytime the camera focuses on his clean, white uniform with the number 42, I suddenly get the urge to spend 10 hours playing Mass Effect. Oh and his guns, those are pretty sweet looking futuristic firearms.
- Olga Kurylenko in the cast is good enough. More of her on the bad later though.
- Since I can't get over the designs that were used in this film, I'm giving a good tag on Cruise's ship here in the movie. It's a helicopter but it's not. Super minimalist with a smooth feature. The best thing about this is that due to the fact that there's no sharp points here, it's a blast to look at. And look at is what we do here in Oblivion as the ship manages to do a lot of good things in the film like say take down a bunch of human-killing droids and explore the vast wasteland that was once Earth.
- I'm not sure if I'm the only one who noticed that the film's main antagonist, the Teth is looming around the background when Universal played it's traditional title card which is a pretty darn great idea.
- The story is too dragging. It was OK for me but the dragging factor has a high risk losing viewers in the process. But you have to understand naman that the creative team tried to explain everything without having the need to resort to a narrator reading off of a script. Plus the pay-off is pretty good so it's forgiveable. In fact, I'd suggest that you take note of everything, every element you see in the film because it may be crucial in helping to understand the story.
- Come to think of it, they already have Morgan Freeman, so why did they not utilize the Academy Award winning actor for the performance. That guy's voice together with the creepy imagery for the opening scene might be a good combination.
- Olga Kurylenko, as mentioned earlier, looks beautiful but for me, there are only small roles and scenes that could've shown her acting skills. I believe that she's grown from being just a good looking woman on the silverscreen to somebody who can throw lines and act. Too bad for her Oblivion is not one of those movies that will let her do that.
- While it teases us about alien invaders, it's pretty clear that it's not the whole truth. I see this as a bad thing because it could be misleading for the general audience.
- Another bad thing here was the obvious and apparent lack of decent action scenes. There's around 2 to 3 tops in the entire theatrical run.
- The ending was a cop out. :/
Overall, Oblivion is a good movie that's filled which shocks and surprises. Also it's not your typical science fiction movie as it features little action scenes. What it lacks in visceral action, it makes up with a nice character driven story. Again, I cannot stress enough the enjoyment that you'll get with the revelation towards the end of the story.
SCORE: 7/10
Special thanks to Solar Entertainment once again.
