Top Five Mutant Substitutes for AVX's Phoenix Five

AVX # 5 ended with a whooper with the Phoenix Force selecting five mutants rather than just it's supposed host Hope Summers; thus giving birth to the so-called Phoenix Five.

That got me thinking, who are some of the other mutants that could have been awesome if they were present during the whole transformation? Here are some potential substitutes for Marvel's Phoenix Five.

5. Rogue

While Rogue never had any real connection to the Phoenix force, she does have a "connection" with Hope. They have an affinity for each other and while the current writers might have forgotten about this, there are hints all over old issues of Uncanny that there's an unresolved plot that involves the two.

As for the Phoenix five sub list, I vote for Rogue because she can really live up to her potential. Imagine Rogue wearing a phoenix emblem uniform and then absorbing the powers of mutants she encounters. Not only that, she actually boosts those powers and keep it to herself or she could even share it with the four other Phoenix Force hosts.

4. Magneto

The master of magnetism joins my substitute list because of his vision, his power set and I really believe he'll get an awesome looking costume if he became a host.

Just check out the old fart's costume during "Age of X" when he called himself "The General".

Plus, in this week's Uncanny X-Men, we see Magneto bitching about not being able to join his X-Tinction team mates in the moon to battle the Avengers and recover Hope. (He does get to take a swig with hotties Storm and Psylocke).

3. Archangel

I'm adding Archangel/ Angel/ Warren Worthington III to the list because of the potential this guy has. I'm not talking about character but potential in the sense of power.

The dude is basically made up of Celestial Life Seed energy which makes for an interesting read in Wolverine and the X-Men. Thanks to Rick Remender we also find out that Angel can become a total bad-ass if he wants to be (see Dark Angel Saga and Uncanny X-Force). If you haven't been up to speed with the whole WATXM book, you'll find that Archangel has some hidden resurrection powers which might be caused by being stabbed by a life seed. See the connection? Rebirth and resurrection and all that stuff.

2. Scarlet Witch

Wanda Maximoff is slated to play a major role in the second act of "AVX". We saw her in AVX # 0 as well as in the first issue where she dreamed about the Phoenix burning the Earth.

What really makes her a good substitute for the Phoenix Five is her role in House of M/ Decimation. She's that powerful and when coupled with the Phoenix force, she can either be the agent for Chaos or order (depending on her mood).

1. Wolverine

Astonishing Spider-Man Wolverine - Dark Phoenix Wolverine

Jason Aaron loves Wolverine so much so I'm guessing that at one point or another he must've have been pushing the editorial staff to make Logan a part of the Phoenix Five.

But for geekery purposes, I'm putting this little nugget on the table. I present Astonishing Wolverine and Spider-Man. In this issue Logan bonds with the Phoenix Force to save the universe.

Though the full extent of Logan's capacity to control the Phoenix Force was not seen in this book. It was a nice touch however to see what Wolverine would look like if things went differently in AVX #5.

Still it was a nice selection. Here they are again folks, the PHOENIX FIVE:
