THE THREE STOOGES MOVIE REVIEW

Movie review for "The Three Stooges" from 20th Century Fox starring Chris Diamantopoulos, Sean Hayes and Will Sasso together with Jane Lynch, Kate Upton, Jennifer Hudson, Sofia Vergara, and the rest of the cast of Jersey Shore.

The Three Stooges is a remake. Let me make that clear. It's not an origin story. It does however have a modern twist to the dimwitted Stooges crazy antics and it's got a chockful of funny lines, gags and bits. The best part about Stooges is that it manages to retain the sensibilities of the original short films and inject new life thanks to modern quips.

I must admit that I had very little hope that this film would match the laughter and giggles that the original offered  But seeing this flick really changed my mind about it. It's funny as heck and it's also entertaining. Here are my other thoughts about the film.

Chris Diamantopoulos as the Moe was hilarious. He actually got the basic look for Moe pretty good. In terms of mannerisms, he's got it down pat pretty good. All the slaps and all the hits and everything else in between is pretty solid. I'm quite impressed with Diamantopoulos' take on the character.

Sadly Moe's turn gets shattered thanks to the inclusion of the Jersey Shore folks. Really felt that it could have been better if the story goes on a different direction; one that didn't include Moe interacting with these guys. But if you feel down and you want to see people getting hurt then those scenes with Moe slapping the Situation are comedy gold.

-Sean Hayes as Larry is spot-on. At first glance you wouldn't even know that it was actually Hayes. The former Will and Grace star goes on and complements the acting or non-acting of Sasso and Diamantopoulo. I guess I'm just weirded out that he looks the way he did but that's just me.

- The movie's sexual overtones are dumbed down but it's still present. From that controversial Kate Upton "nun-kini" scene...

... to that bit where Sofia Vergara's ta-ta's gets stepped on (for comedic purposes). Whether that will bring any bearing is really up to the viewer. However I must say that its not really a big deal. The cut that I've seen for instance did not contain that 'nunkini' dialogue, we're just treated to a few seconds of Ms. Upton's scene and then we move on; which is good right?

- I was dumbfounded with the role that was given to Jane Lynch in this one. I really thought that she would go on her classic Sue Sylvester role but from start to finish she really did act like a saint all throughout. Pretty good at breaking down the stereotypes. The same goes for Sister Mary Mengele (Larry David) who either gets hit (rather hardly) or is delivers the punchline. This gives viewers a break from all the senseless hitting you'll be seeing in the film.

- The three acts for the film is broken down into episodes all of them paying homage to the classic opening cards used for the actual Three Stooges series.

- The best thing about The Three Stooges was slapstick. It's not too violent slapstick but what I consider as classy slapstick. Stooges proves that this sub-genre of comedy still lives and still works if the right material is given to the right people (read Farelly Brothers + Three Stooges).

Overall I had such a grand time watching The Three Stooges. It's mindless slapstick fun for both new and old fans of the the classic comedy trio.If there's anything that we could expect from The Three Stooges its that it will introduce the classic comedy trio to a new generation who might have never even heard of them.

"The Three Stooges" is now showing in all theaters and locally distributed by 20th Century Fox Philippines and Warner Bros.
