REVIEW The LEGO Movie

The LEGO Movie is by far the best looking commercial for the LEGO brand EVER and it also came in packaged with a movie which is very cool.

The film features the voices of Chris Pratt, Will Arnett, Morgan Freeman, Will Ferrell, Liam Neeson, Elizabeth Banks, Alison Bree and a whole lot more (including three cast members of the 21 Jump Street reboot film). It's the typical story of mistaken identity and finding the hero within you. Typical stuff that will be an eye opener for kids. If you'd be looking for a deep storyline, The LEGO movie ain't for you. That being said, it's still a pretty enjoyable movie both in 2D and 3D. 

Chris Pratt is Emmet, a basic construction minifigure who has suddenly become the prophesied "Master Builder" who will save the Lego world from the nefarious Lord Business/ President Business. He has to stop Business from using the 'Kragle' which will end everything good and wonderful about their worlds. Pretty generic movie plot.

GOOD 

- It's a quirky film, I'll give them that. You just can't pass on the chance to see a movie featuring all sorts of licensed characters coming together albeit in LEGO form. Gandalf, Batman, Shaquille O'Neal and even the Ninja Turtles make cameos somewhere in the movie.

- The humor is OK. The film has several chuckle inducing moments and a few "laugh out loud" ones but it'll take some getting used to pop culture references to get some of the stuff thrown.

- Visuals are appealing for both kids and adults alike. There's something about the LEGO movie that will make you want to pickup a LEGO set and build, build, build!

- The soundtrack is awesome. Everything is awesome. Lonely Island.

- Voice acting done are nice. Morgan Freeman as Vetruvius and Chris Pratt as the bumbling but lovable Emett is one of the best quality I've seen as early as now. Alison Brie's character here is also adorbs to the 10th power. Oh and there's also the 'cameo' of 22 Jump Street stars Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. .

- I was rooting for Liam Neeson as Bad Cop. The guy has some issues and he's also a very well-written villain. Plus throughout the movie he's got some sweet rides and superior weaponry as well.

- The inclusion of the surprise bit redeemed the movie. It's the major reveal AND a nice appearance of one of the cast. Very nice family values imbued in it. That was actually well-thought of. Good job producers and director!

BAD

- Under utilizing Will Ferrell was a bad idea. Sure he's Lord Evil and he's got a huge OCD for perfection and  weaponized glue but he's not effective as a villain. Where's the Mugatu? I was expecting a Mugatu-esque performance but that wasn't executed.

- For a movie that's 'General Patronage' it's got a lot of violence. Lego's getting blasted, getting their heads cut off, getting glued and a whole lot more... Brick violence kinda throws the film off by a few degrees.

- I had such high hopes that the 3D here would be magnificent but it's a dud. Not impressed, not happy. You wont be missing anything if you see the film in a regular theater.

VERDICT

22 Jump Street Gets a Teaser Poster

Columbia Pictures and MGM have just revealed the teaser poster of “22 Jump Street,” the sequel to the 2012 action-comedy blockbuster “21 Jump Street.”

“22 Jump Street” reunites Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as they return to their roles as undercover cops Schmidt and Jenko; they are also re-teaming with 21 Jump Street producer Neal H. Moritz ("Fast and Furious" franchise) and directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (“Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,” upcoming “The LEGO Movie”). Alongside Hill and Tatum, Ice Cube reprises his role as Captain Dickson.
After making their way through high school (twice), big changes are in store for officers Schmidt (Hill) and Jenko (Tatum) when they go deep undercover at a local college. But when Jenko meets a kindred spirit on the football team, and Schmidt infiltrates the bohemian art major scene, they begin to question their partnership. Now they don't have to just crack the case - they have to figure out if they can have a mature relationship. If these two overgrown adolescents can grow from freshmen into real men, college might be the best thing that ever happened to them.

Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis Rock in Jupiter Ascending Trailer

The Wachowski's new film Jupiter Ascending has released it's first trailer and I'm impressed partly due to the caliber of stars which include Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum and Ned Stark himself, Sean Bean.

Synopsis:

Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis star in "Jupiter Ascending," an original science fiction epic adventure from filmmakers Lana and Andy Wachowski (The Matrix).

This film reminds me of two things. One is that AMORY WARS comic book series that progressive rock band Coheed and Cambria came up with a few years ago and second, Mark Millar's Jupiter's Legacy (formerly Jupiter's Children)due to the title.

THIS IS THE END Review

Take five of the some of the most famous Hollywood comedians and place them in an apocalyptic situation and you've got yourself the makings of a great comedy such as "THIS IS THE END" which will be exclusively playing in Ayala Cinemas.

So if you live in a bunker and you're not familiar with who the cast members are, here goes: Seth Rogen (Knocked Up), James Franco (Spider-Man 1,2 and 3, 127 Hours, Oz the Great and Powerful), Jay Baruchel (Tropic Thunder, How to Train your Dragon 2), Craig Robinson (Hot Tub Time Machine 1 & 2), Danny McBride (Your Highness, Tropic Thunder) and Jonah Hill (Moneyball, 21 Jump Street, Django Unchained). 

There's a number of reasons why I'm putting the film in such a high regard. First, it managed to topple the already high standing of Adam Sandler's LITTLE NICKY. Secondly it's a no-brainer, stoner-friendly comedy starring the same guys from such films as TROPIC THUNDER, YOUR HIGHNESS, PINEAPPLE EXPRESS, 21 JUMP STREET and so much more. That alone is worth the ticket price. If you still need a bit of convincing then hold on...

The movie is obnoxious and downright irreverent which makes it much more appealing to watch (well because it's silly and we all get to laugh at silliness right?) From Danny McBride's A-grade performance as a certified asshole to stuff like the two dozen cameos splattered across the film, THIS IS THE END is certainly worth watching.

THE GOOD:

- The main cast is star power enough but check out the cameos and guest appearance. They've got Jason Segel, Kevin Hart, that Indian chick from that drama series, that Indian guy from I think "The Office", a very different looking Paul Rudd and more importantly - RIHANNA. 

- The BACKSTREET BOYS. 

- A potential teaser to PINEAPPLE EXPRESS 2 all taken using the camera that Franco used in "127 Hours". 

- There's also a ton of movie references thrown around the film. One that stood out was the comment hurled about Seth Rogen making a "Green Hornet" movie that did not suck. Oh and they want us to believe that James Franco loves himself so much that he'd keep standees from his New/ Green Goblin days. 

- I hated Danny McBride ever since. And "This is the End" definitely proved why I hate him so much. But with so much hate, maybe he shows that he's an effective actor/ comedian. Still I hate that guy. 

- The music that they chose to use in the film was also great. They've got M.I.A.'s Paper Planes, Dr. Dre and Snoop's Next Episode and my favorite, PSY's Gangnam Style. Used to the best of their abilities. 

- The jizzing jokes were funny and cringeworthy at the same time. 


THE BAD

- Rape jokes. I hate rape jokes. It's improper and just plain bad. Thank goodness they got limited that bit. 

- Forced bromosexual tensions. Not cool. We get that you guys are buds and all but some things are just depicted too much. 

- Demon Dicks. No thank you. 

- There's really something disturbing about seeing Channing Tatum in this film. 

VERDICT: Me and the missues had a grand time watching THIS IS THE END. It's crass and a bit boorish and asinine but there's a lot of redemption going on in this movie (both literally and figuratively). Catch it when it starts rolling exclusively in AYALA CINEMAS starting September 11.

White House Down Review

Roland Emmerich blows up the White House again in his new film "White House Down" starring Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx and Maggie Gylenhaal. Here are my thoughts on this new film from Columbia Pictures hitting theaters July 3.

The film centers on Capitol police officer John Cale (Tatum) who is unwittingly caught in a hostile takeover of the White House on the day he brings his daughter to the White House. Things go down south when a couple of plot twists come up and he reluctantly plays bodyguard to the President of the United States (Foxx).

The movie starts out in a pretty slow, almost dragging pace but the most the first bomb goes off, the roller coaster ride begins. I like roller coaster rides and while some might think of "White House Down" as a new and clever way of blowing up the White House once again, I'm to think that it does have its strong points.

If you ever felt like you were shortchanged by the lack of Channing Tatum-ness in "G.I. Joe Retaliation" then you should definitely go and see this film. As one of my Facebook friends mentioned, this is the GI Joe movie that never was. And I actually agree, it's GI Joe through and through, with themes of patriotism and lots of explosion and politics, you could actually pass of "White House Down" as a good Duke solo mission movie.

Tatum is an all-around guy in this movie. He jumps, punches, drives like a maniac, quips and even tries really hard to act like a father to an almost grown up Joey King [the little girl from Ramona and Beezus]. yes, he fails. Also if they were trying to pair up Rachel Dawes Maggie Gyllenhaal with the lead star, it doesn't work. Still, Tatum just reinforces the idea, thanks to the WHD, that he is this generation's action star, he's marketable and ladies love to swoon over him.

Jamie Foxx on the other hand is a different story. The 'Django Unchained' star plays the role of President Sawyer. For the first time in years, Foxx plays a funny guy once again. Not corny and comedic, just plain funny. He might be a gunslinger here but the guy certainly pulls his own weight in the movie. As far as I'm concerned, Foxx did a great turn with lines as cheesy and campy as 'get your hands off my Jordans'. The guy definitely deserves your vote... of confidence. .

White House Down is also a cleverly disguised 'disaster porn'.

It's not as over the top as "2012" but it definitely tries to hit that mark in sheer widescreen terror. As mentioned earlier, Emmerich gets to blow up the White House (again.); destroys Air Force One using an ICBM launched from the midwest and have ground force one run around like Herby on crack. Things just have a tendency to go boom in this flick.

While the onscreen tandem of Foxx and Tatum is untested, it actually works in some scenes and fails in others. But it's usually more of the former rather than the later.

In terms of the villains in this movie, can't say I'm impressed with the choices. We've got the legendary James Woods as presidential security chief Martin Walker and Jason Clarke as the imposing Emil Stentz. The fight scenes were just OK nothing to really speak highly off but enough to get your adrenaline going. There were a couple of visuals here that appeared to be dated such as the look on the US raptor fighter jets deployed to level the White House. Then Wood's final moments alive onscreen also looked so fake. ( I won't spoil how it ends though).

Finally, can't say that I wasn't pleased with the touches of Metal Gear Solid in this movie. There's talks of the military-industrial complex; talks about patriotism and sacrifices. And hell even Stenz's team are PMCs and its blantantly referred to throughout the movie.

Overall, while WHITE HOUSE DOWN might seem like a generic action movie with themes and motiffs copied from classic 80s and 90s action movies; there's a modern world sensibility to it. Tatum is slowly improving on his acting and if he just keeps up with all the sliding and jumping, he'll probably catch up with other Hollywood action heroes like his Retaliation co-star Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel.

White House Down is simply a nice addition to the Hollywood Summer Blockbusters for this year. It's silly and a bit campy but once you've accepted that fact, you'll start enjoying the movie. Yes, I used the word enjoy. Just sit back and enjoy and just don't meddle too much on the plot. 

Verdict: 7/10

Channing Tatum, Man of Iron Will in "White House Down" (Opens Jul 3)

One of today's hottest leading men, Channing Tatum (“G.I Joe: Rise of the Cobra,” “The Vow”) plays John Cale, an ex-soldier and divorced father who’s trying to put his life back on solid footing, in director Roland Emmerich's new action-thriller “White House Down.”

Ex-military, now a Capitol policeman, Cale is a father struggling to bond with his estranged daughter. And as “White House Down” begins, it looks like Cale still hasn’t quite figured it out. “But his heart is good – he’s always wanted to be his daughter’s hero,” says Tatum. “And now that he’s realizing that he can’t be that, due to mistakes he’s made, he thinks, ‘Well, she idolizes the president – if I can’t be her hero, maybe I can help protect the guy who is.’”

In the film, Cale's just been turned down by the Secret Service – despite his heroic career, he has been deemed unqualified to protect the president. But everything will change for him when that same day, on a chance visit to the White House, the unimaginable happens: a paramilitary group attacks the building, and only Cale is in a position to protect the president.

“It’s the perfect motivation for the character,” says producer Harald Kloser. “He wants nothing more than to protect the president. And that’s partly because his daughter wants that so badly, too – the president is her hero. But the person from the Secret Service who is doing the interview – the person who holds his future – doesn’t feel he’s up for the job. He doesn’t get it. And then all hell breaks loose – he has to save his daughter, the president, and the world. He has to earn the job about 20 times throughout the course of the movie.”

“The thing Cale really cares about is repairing his relationship with his daughter,” says Tatum. “He’s a guy who ran away from a lot of his problems, and even though he’s stopped running now, he’s wondering if it’s too late. If it takes saving the leader of the free world to get the love and respect of his daughter, then that’s just what he’s going to have to do.”

“Cale is a very ordinary guy,” says Emmerich. “He’s one of those characters who just wants to do the right thing, but whatever he does, it’s not quite working. And then, with the events that happen in this story, he gets his chance. He has a very strong motivation, but a lot to overcome.”

Part of the attraction to “White House Down” for Tatum was the chance to work with Emmerich. “I’ve had so much fun on this movie,” adds Tatum. “One morning we were shooting at five a.m. – it was a long day and he was the only one chipper as he could possibly be. He leads from the front, and I like that.”

For Emmerich, the feeling was mutual – the chance to work with Channing Tatum was the last piece of the puzzle that sealed the deal. “When I met him, I immediately realized that I would only make the movie with him – if he didn’t do it, I wouldn’t, either,” says the director. “I realized he was exactly that character – a very good-looking guy, but with a strong ‘everyman’ feeling about him. He’s funny and smart, he knows what he wants.”

G.I. Joe Retaliation Review

Where G.I. Joe Rise of Cobra failed to deliver, it's sequel G.I.Joe Retaliation has proven that a cartoon series from the 80s can be turned into a very entertaining movie minus the campiness. The movie stars Channing Tatum, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Park, Ray Stevenson, Bruce Willis, Elodie Yung and Byung Hun-Lee. The flick is directed by Jon M. Chu and written by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese.

Here's the breakdown:

3 New Teaser Posters for White House Down

“It will start like any other day,” so the teaser posters of the new action thriller “White House Down” cryptically say. Columbia Pictures has just launched the initial one-sheets the Roland Emmerich-directed potential blockbuster starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx.

In the film, capitol policeman John Cale (Tatum) has just been denied his dream job with the Secret Service of protecting President James Sawyer (Foxx). Not wanting to let down his little girl with the news, he takes her on a tour of the White House, when the complex is overtaken by a heavily armed paramilitary group. Now, with the nation’s government falling into chaos and time running out, it's up to Cale to save the president, his daughter, and the country.

A follow-up to the 2009 worldwide blockbuster G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA, which grossed over $300 million worldwide, In GI JOE: RETALIATION, the team is not only fighting their mortal enemy COBRA, but they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence. Converting the film into 3D takes the movie to a whole new level and brings the audience even closer to the non-stop action. G.I. JOE RETALIATION hits theaters in RealD 3D & Digital 3D.

The G.I. JOE mythology runs deep and has a pantheon of characters to draw from, each with their own back-story, nuances and characteristics. When approaching the sequel, the filmmakers wanted to build on the best elements and storylines from the first film and carry those through to the second installment while simultaneously creating a new identity and feel. This offered the opportunity to introduce new characters from the mythology to the franchise.

The addition of 3D to the film is going to bring the film into a whole different playing field.

MOVIE REVIEW: 21 Jump Street

GIST: The movie is a testosterone fueled movie filled with dirty jokes and high school humor. It's actually quite funny and somewhere along the grossly funny moments you will definitely see how much things have changed in the real world. Also this has got to be one of the funniest movie starring Jonah Hill.

Sneak Peek: 21 Jump Street

In Columbia Pictures' action-comedy “21 Jump Street,” Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) were enemies in high school who became unlikely friends in Police Academy. While they may not be the best cops on the beat, they have a chance to turn it around when they join the police department's secret Jump Street unit, run by Captain Dickson (Ice Cube). They trade in their guns and badges for backpacks and use their youthful appearances to go undercover.

Trouble is, teenagers today are nothing like what they were just a few years ago, and Schmidt and Jenko discover that everything they think they know about being a teenager, from sex to drugs to rock and roll, is all wrong. More importantly, they both find they are still dealing with all of the adolescent problems they didn't address in their own teen years - and both will have to confront the terror and anxiety of being a teenager again and all the issues they thought they had left behind.
