Five Good Reasons to See Pacific Rim

Guillermo Del Toro's Pacific Rim is about to hit theaters in a few days so I wanted to write something as to why it's important that you see this movie which stars Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman and Rinko Kikuchi.

1. Guillermo Del Toro directs

Master director Guillermo Del Toro put his heart into this project. And whenever Del Toro puts his heart into a project, you can bank on it being great. Look at the two Hellboy movies plus Pan's Labyrinth. Heck just read my review of Mama and you'll see that all his works are stunningly beautiful in one way or another.

2. There's Kaiju or Giant Monsters in it

Honestly, will you ever even doubt for a second that a movie which will feature half a dozen or so 'kaijus' or giant monsters is not worth seeing. Hell, we all lined up to see J.J. Abrams' Cloverfield despite the fact that we only have a total of 15 minutes worth of 'widescreen' footage of the monster? Pacific Rim is a movie of gargantuan proportions and destruction. Not worth seeing? Not bloody likely.

3. Giant Robots are here to cancel the apocalypse

Sure calling the mechs "jaegers" might not be as hardcore as a different name but hey a giant robot is still a giant robot. And  they have pilots to control their actions. Also from a production/ technical standpoint, the mechs that they use in "Pacific Rim" are well designed and visually appealing. Not so horrendous as those B-movie robot films from the 90s. Oh and the word "jaeger" is German for "hunter"; so how's that not badass?

4. Stars of their own caliber.

People may argue that actors like Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam and the rest of the movie won't draw in crowds in theaters like say Brad Pitt and World War Z. But you can't go and argue that these guys and gals have their own crowd. Elba's a staple in a lot of superhero movies, he's not yet the stereotypical black guy in the movie so that's good. Charlie Hunnam is kicking butt in "Sons of Anarchy" which is enjoying a good run on TV. His co-star on "Sons" Ron Perlman is also in this flick. The same goes for  comedian Charlie Day and actress Rinko Kikuchi.

5. Hideo Kojimo among others swear by the movie.

Metal Gear boss man Hideo Kojima did an eight round tweet session after seeing the movie. Here's what he said:

Other celebs who swear that this movie is epic include: Kanye West, Emma Watson and more.

Catch "Pacific Rim" when it opens July 11. Distributed locally by Warner Bros. Pictures Philippines.

Pretty obvious that this is just a prototype but you really can't help but wish that you had your own 3D printer at home huh?

Dammit now I want to go and get my own 3D printer.

Torture, Death and New Gameplay Mechanics for Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain's Red Band Trailer

The redband trailer for Konami's Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain has been released and it's equal parts gory and disturbing and then amazing and superb.

A word of warning, there's lots of violence and gore here. Yes, gore as in intestines kinda gore. Be wary.

Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection Announced in South Korea

Too bad for Playstation 3 owners who jumped at the Metal Gear Solid HD remastered disc as we'll soon be getting all the Metal Gear Games that were released for the Playstation.

So it's the four Metal Gear Solid games plus the remastered, HD version of Peace Walker. I do want to point out that I totally love that poster.

Hideo Kojima must be proud.

The Phantom Pain Trailer Surfaces

Hideo Kojima is still keeping mum on the truth behind the new Konami game 'The Phantom Pain' which uses the new Fox Engine and is developed by new company Moby Dick Studio.

Check out the trailer after the cut plus some screenshots.

Now check out some of the screenshots from the trailer with a bit of comments.

1. The main character's back is always seen so we rarely get to see his face. The final moments of the trailer did treat us to a view of the protagonist who looks very much like a certain commando we know as Big Boss/ Solid Snake.

If that's still not enough, here's a bigger and better picture of the mysterious new character from Siliconera

2.  The mystery man even crawls very much like how Snake crawls.

3.  There's also death, mystery, flames and running...

4. There's also the mystery people who aren't the protagonist including what seems to be the horse that once belonged to The Boss in Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater and the mysterious figure named Joakim N. Mogren.

The Phantom Pain will be available for the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360.

Update: The good folks at THE VIDEO GAME GUILD (looking at you Leandro) that Kojima has no direct connection to this project and that the bandaged man isn't Joakim (it's actually an anagram for Kojima), which doesn't make sense since Hideo san ain't involved. blergh.

The PS3 Exclusive DLC for Metal Gear Rising Revengeance

Metal Gear Rising Revengeance will soon be upon us so the topic of DLCs is really inevitabitable. So what's the very first DLC that will be released by Konami? Well it's none other than the classic VR Missions.

Back when the Playstation was cool and Metal Gear Solid was the shiznit, I'd spend hours playing the VR Missions if not to hone the stealth skills needed to get a great rank for MGS. This of course is a mighty throwback to that day and age only this time instead of using MGS star Solid Snake (or his daddy Big Boss) we'll be using Raiden.

Metal Gear Rising - Like Fruit Ninja Only Bloodier

The Video Game Awards 2011 or VGA 2011 showed a lot of interesting video game trailers but it seems like there were only a handful of games that really kicked ass. One of said ass-kicking games was the Hideo Kojima produced "Metal Gear Rising" which starred MGS2 lead Raiden.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance will feature a violent and bloody cool fighting system that will be more third player rather than first person shooter.

Players assume control of cyborg ninja Raiden, the katana-wielding ally of series mainstay Solid Snake. Unlike previous titles in the Metal Gear series, Rising is strictly an action game, focusing on swordfighting and a sophisticated cutting system. The game's cutting system allows players to engage in third person melee combat, as well as precisely slash enemies and objects "at will" along a geometrical plane using a "free slicing" mode.

Virtually any object in the game can be cut, including vehicles and enemies, though elements of the environment were intentionally limited to structures such as pillars and walls to better facilitate gameplay. The free slicing mode is similar to other aiming modes in previous Metal Gear Solid titles, but produces a special targeting reticule in the form of a transparent blue plane which can be rotated and moved, tracing orange lines across the surfaces of objects to indicate exactly where they will be cut; it can also be used to enter a bullet time state, giving players the opportunity to precisely slash targets during moments of action, such as slicing through a falling target from multiple angles before it hits the ground.

These features can be employed strategically, for example disabling opponents, finding weak points and gaps in armor, severing support columns to collapse ceilings or walls onto enemies, deflecting enemy fire, or cutting through objects to remove enemy cover.[12][13] Although Raiden's main weapon will be his high-frequency blade, he will also have "sub-weapons", Kimura revealed; gameplay footage has briefly shown Raiden wielding a dagger in his left hand.[13][14] In the debut trailer for the rebooted title, Raiden was also seen grappling and throwing large robotic enemies, and dramatically increasing his running speed for short bursts. A key gameplay feature initially announced for game was titled zan-datsu (斬奪 lit. "cut and take"?), and would have involved "cutting" through enemies and "taking" parts, energy, ammunition, items, and information from the bodies of dismembered cyborgs and robots.[12][13] [14] For example, in the E3 2010 trailer, Raiden tears a battery — in the form of a glowing mechanical spine — from a dismembered cyborg enemy, which he then crushes after absorbing energy from it to heal himself.

This gameplay element will not remain as the focus of the game, but will still be optional as of the move to Platinum Games, dialogue in the most recent trailer discusses such extracting of fluids from enemy cyborgs in order to obtain electrolytes.[citation needed] The game's original director, Mineshi Kimura, stated that Rising would carry on the series tradition of encouraging players to progress through the game without killing, noting that there is a moral difference between attacking cyborgs or robots and attacking human beings, and that there's a "certain virtue to simply disabling your enemies instead of killing them."While it was considered important to give the players freedom to do what they want, the game's original producer Shigenobu Matsuyama, indicated that players would never be rewarded for killing human opponents, and that the game will be designed so that players are never forced to do so.
