Movie Review: Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

Reviewing the film "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" on IMAX which stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Josh Hutcherson, Vanessa Hudgens, Luis Guzman and Michael Caine from Warner Bros.

So where do I begin? Should I begin with the stunning visual effects or should I go with the overal vibe and feel for the movie?

I know, let me start by saying that Dwayne Johnson is definitely becoming the action star for 2012 from last year's Fast Five appearance to his latest movie to his upcoming movie GI Joe 2 Retaliation it seems like The Rock has finally come back to give his best in the silverscreen.

Now that that comment has been mentioned its time to go to the review proper:

Josh Hutchinson reprises his role as Sean Anderson for the movie and this time goes on a completely different adventure together with his step-dad/ legal guardian Hank played by Johnson. Hank and Sean discover a map to Jules Verne's legendary book "The Mysterious Island" which they believe to have been sent by Sean's grandfather (played amusingly by Michael Caine).

The unlikely duo travel to Palau where they connect with father and daughter tandem of Gabato (Luis Guzman) and Kailani (Hudgens). Tragedy strikes and the characters wake up with no helicopter and no means of getting out of the island. Soon the group rescues Sean's grandfather and leaves the island before it sinks back into the Pacific Ocean.

The film was simple and was easy to follow. If you've seen the first movie, then all you need to know is that Sean Anderson has a new set of characters he's going to work with in this movie. In fact all the backstory you need to know was the fact that Sean is back, ditching Brendan Frasier in exchange for the former WWE champion. And this time, he also gets a new love interest in the Fil-Am actress Vanessa Hudgens who looks gorgeous in this flick.

I found the movie to be truly entertaining. Like the first Journey, you just have to sit back and enjoy the movie (even better if its on IMAX, I know there's one in SM Mall of Asia, one in SM Southmall and another in SM North EDSA).  All other formats may be good but you'll really be extremely pleased with the effects and all that great action scenes through the IMAX. You'd be pleased to know that there are a lot of scenes that will look really awesome if you see it on IMAX.

The movie is on top of my list of more light hearted movies especially with the various interactions each character has. From the budding romance between characters Sean and Kailani, to the development of a father-son dynamic between Hank and Sean, to the father and daughter dynamics of Kailani and Gabby or Gabato.

And I'm not even getting started on Michael Caine who proves once again that you can still put on a good act regardless of what genre that might be. His fun and devil-may-care spirit characterization for this film is a fresh new look at this esteemed actor and all-the-way English gent.

Another thing that I loved about the movie was how the writers managed to create a somewhat believable plot regarding the true identity of the Mysterious Island. Not only that, the creative team manages to connect other classic literary masterpieces such as "Treasure Island" and "Gulliver's Travels" together to literally create an island. Oh and they also managed to connect "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" with the help of the appearance of the Nautilus and Captain Nemo (both item and character was last seen in the movie "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen")

It's a fun and enjoyable movie that people would be able to enjoy for an hour or two and its certainly a movie that will definitely kick start your reading habits once more especially  if your a voracious bookworm. In fact, I'm already starting to read "Mysterious Island" right now.

overall, the movie is a fun ride and you shouldn't dare miss this great movie.
