The Phoenix Chooses between Cyclops, Wolverine and Captain America in AvX # 5

Marvel Comics continues to tease fans with the reveal for the cover of Avengers vs X-Men # 5 by Matt Fraction, John Romita Jr. and covers by Jim Cheung.

The regular cover seems interesting as we get to see the fiery Phoenix raptor display burning the three central figures in this new event - Wolverine, Cyclops and Captain America of the Avengers.

Here's the solicit that came along with the cover:

AVENGERS VS X-MEN #5 (of 12)
MATT FRACTION (W) • JOHN ROMITA JR (a)
Cover by JIM CHEUNG

Avengers Team Variant Also Available
X-Men Team Variant Also Available
Stegman Sketch Variant Also Available
• The fiery conclusion of Act One brought to you by Matt Fraction and John Romita Jr!
• Clashing on a lunar battlefield, the tide of the conflict will be turned…
• The Phoenix takes its host! All hope is lost?!
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

So what manner of sorcery is this? The Avengers and the X-Men are fighting on the moon? The Moon. This might probably mean the "Blue Area of the Moon"; the same place where the real Jean Grey died during th e events of the "Dark Phoenix Saga".

I'm really curious as to who gets to be the new host for the Phoenix. My money's on this cover being a red herring and that it's still the annoying Hope Summers that gets to be the host. That or maybe it's really Quintin Quire.

  1. I think there are going to be two Pheonix's. Of sorts I'm thinking Hope is technically pure Phoenix. Cause the last Phoenix comics I read. Had Jean coming back and in the end. She spoke of the Phoenix having been blown up into thousands of fragments. An she left flying into space to get them and try to reform.

Well one fragment was in the Stepford Cuckoos a.k.a. Three-in-One, but that fragment left them a few months ago. An I think it went into the closest amount of Pheonix power Hope. Now the rest is coming back for Hope.
