10 Thoughts on Justice League # 15

DC Comics has released parts 1 and 2 of the crossover arc "Throne of Atlantis" which pits The Justice League against Atlantis with Aquaman caught in the middle. Here's a look at the first part which is Justice League # 15 written by Geoff Johns with art by Ivan Reis

Also Jim Lee departs from the book that he started but he did leave a nice variant cover...

Check out my thoughts on this book after the cut.

1. Dumb aircraft carrier

The whole story arc of "Throne of Atlantis" can be seen as a loosely based, alternate reality story of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Instead of standing down however, somebody has managed to release nukes on Atlantean territory which causes untold damage (and dare I even say a lot of bodies). While this is seen as nothing more than a freak accident, Atlanteans tend to think differently.

Also, don't they have countermeasures if this happens in real life? Why didn't they scramble anything and simply look at the missiles flying away.

2. Superman's logic

Superman explains to his new boo Wonder Woman why the glasses are important. To the Man of Steel, the glasses are actually the inversion of Bruce Wayne/ Batman and his mask.

3. Wonder Woman's hardsell on the glasses

Yeah Diana, you really expect us to believe that a 6 foot something guy that's awkward and clumsy would be Superman. Hell yes.

4. The Superdate

They're a cute couple and contrary to what haters think, this new relationship between these two provides some great character developments. Hopefully we get to see some of Clark/Superman rub off on Diana in her own book and vice versa.

5. The Scarecrow's minions

In Justice League # 15 we get to see the Scarecrow's minions fighting off and then trying to evade Batman. I'm not too sure that this is the first appearance of these new minions, but I kinda dig what artist Ivan Reis did with their uniform. By making them 'crows' they are made 'scared' of Dr. Jonathan Crane which makes sense in a really weird way.

6. Aquaman and his classic pose.

What is it with Aquaman and why does he always do this pose whenever he wants to go on to full "bad-ass" mode. He did this in # 15 and also did the same damn thing when he first appeared in the first JL story...

7. Mera and her new costume

Who's happy with the redesign for Mera? I definitely am good with this new redesign. The vambraces seem a bit out of place but it does make a statement that Mera's dead serious. Changing the costume from a skintight green costume to something that's a cross between scale mail armor and a dressing contradicts the previous statement however. Why can't she just stick to

8. Lois Lane jealous!

Quite happy with the reaction on Lois' face when she sees Superman and Wonder Woman working together. Yeah, that's right, betcha Caroll can't save you from a toppling aircraft carrier in the middle of Metropolis. Lane's reaction on seeing her former husband working closely and intimately with Wonder Woman is something that's already a classic and at the same time gives hope for the Lois & Clark pairing to return down the line.

To be honest, this is the first non-alien invasion, massive scale destruction that the league needs to deal with. However you also have to remember that this is still an invasion in the sense that the Atlanteans plan on dishing out holy hell on the "surface-dwellers". There might not be a Darkseid involved but you can certainly bank on Oceanmaster to do as much damage.

9. Superman and Wonder Woman to the Rescue

Coming clean here, I really just wanted to add this to the list because it looks damn cool. Seeing Wonder Woman take off her glasses and do the semi-classic Lynda Carter change. Oh and it's also a kick to see Clark Kent do the classic tear-my-shirt-apart costume change.

10. Aquaman pulls a Tower of Babel with Atlanteans

Depending on who you ask, this moment from Justice League # 15 either stands out the most or will probably suck the most. The end of the issue reveals that this 'attack' strategy done by the Atlanteans is based on a play-by-play instruction manual created by the brothers Arthur and Orm after the events of "The Other League" and the first issue of Johns and Lee's Justice League.

Not sure if Justice League # 15 is still up your alley especially after Jim Lee but I'm definitely sold with the storytelling. It's got the missing "oomph" that was prevalently absent in the first major story arc for the team. I'm even hearing that this bridges the events that will transpire in 2013's "Trinity War".
