Here's my review for Admission starring Tina Fey and Paul Rudd exclusively showing in all Ayala Cinemas nationwide starting March 22.
In this flick Fey plays the role of Portia Nathan, a Princeton admissions officer who suddenly gets tangled into comedic hijinks and serious adult problems after a visit to new developmental school Quest operated by John Pressman played by Paul Rudd. Things kick up to the next level when Rudd reveals that young genius Jeremiah gets smitten by Princeton. Oh and Jeremiah may or may not be his long lost teenage son whom Portia gave up for adoption years ago.
THE GOOD:
- Tina Fey is so cute. A hint of sexiness here in this film. Mind you she plays a nerdy character so her sex appeal is downplayed. Totally downplayed. Still we see bits and pieces of the beauty that is Tina Fey here.
- The story in itself shows promise. The conflicts and the contradictions are worth looking at as well. Suddenly made me want to pass my application to Princeton. Wala lang, trip lang.
- The comedic bits were alright in my opinion. You even get to giggle in a few scenes which, surprisingly, does not feature Tina Fey. Surprising.
THE BAD:
- The movie doesn't really know what it is. One moment it's a comedy film thanks to Tina Fey, then it shifts to being a rom-com then goes to full-on drama mode. It really just doesn't know what it is and that's where the conflict lies.
- Tina Fey's script demands more drama which is really sad given that she was so good with making people laugh. Also the stigma of spearheading "30 Rock" does make me look at her in that way.
- Was expecting Paul Rudd to deliver more but script really demands that he play the cool teacher part, which he does with utmost perfection.
- The ending was kind of a bummer IMHO. Sitting through the whole movie only to seeing that it panned out like this is a bit of a bummer.
VERDICT:
7.5/10
Admission is exclusively screening in all Ayala Malls Cinemas and opens March 22. Again, special thanks to AYALA MALLS.
