Adventures of Superman # 1 Review

Reviewing Adventures of Superman # 1 from DC Comics written by Jeff Parker, Jeff Lemire, Justin Jordan with art provided by Chris Samnee, Jeff Lemire and Riley Rossmo in partnership with Comicx Hub.com

Solicit: Don’t miss the debut of this all-new series starring The Man of Steel, written and illustrated by some of comics’ finest talents! Witness Superman’s first encounter with the work of Lex Luthor, brought to you by Jeff Parker (Hulk) and Chris Samnee (Daredevil)! Also, Bizarro has his worst (best?) day ever, penned by Justin Jordan with art by fan-favorite Riley Rossmo! Plus, from the mind of Jeff Lemire comes Superman vs. Brainiac! Or is it Luthor? Or Zod?? Find out in this month's issue!

Do you still have a hankering for the Pre-Flashpoint Superman but can't do so because DC wanted to revamp Superman into the lovable douchebag that he is at the moment? Well, there's a new book that might just tickle your fancy and it's "Adventures of Superman'.

If you haven't been paying attention, the book's divided into three different stories. The first one involves an all-out brawl between Superman and superpowered hobo who can literally stop Kal-El's punches. Nothing is fun about beating a homeless man/ junkie who's in terrible pain and we get to see that Superman is doing the same thing. That's the strength of this book, while the creators get to play with the Man of Steel in terms of physical actions, we also get to see what makes Superman tick, what makes him more 'Man" than 'Super'.

The book's not hampered by time lines as evidenced once again by Parker and Samnee's story, which was set weeks or even months before Superman and Lex Luthor's first 'real' encounter.

Jeff Lemire's work here is also quite pleasing. I've always have this aversion for Lemire's art but seeing how the art complements the story, I totally loved it. And not only that, I can also totally relate to the stuff that's happening in lemire's story partly because while growing up me and my brother did the same thing. Only we'd switch from one hero to another.

Finally the Bizarro story written by Justin Jordan together with Riley Rossmo was also brilliant. We've been lacking some Bizarro loving from the New 52 and this gives us our fix for the twisted mirror image of Superman. Again, it shows that the old Superman worked with him using his brains AND heart rather than just his fist.

So here's the breakdown for the entire issue of Adventures of Superman # 1: Parker and Samnee's story was the fist, Lemire's was the heart and Jordan and  Rossmo's were the head.

Verdict: 9/10

Special thanks to Comicx Hub and Castle Geek for the issue. Grab your copies of Adventures of Superman # 1 as it's still available HERE.
