All New X-Men # 12 Review

All New X-Men # 12 review in partnership with Comicx Hub and Castle Geek.

The book is written by Brian Michael Bendis with art by Stuart Immonen.

Month in and month out, Bendis' ALL NEW X-MEN book just wows me. It's not relatable in the street level but it does great parallels about real world topics such as prejudice and coping with a huge catastrophe or disaster. Plus there's also great splash pages and seeds of a bigger event for the X-books (X-Men: Battle of the Atom).

In this issue, it's the first encounter between young Cyclops (Scott Summers) and his younger (older) brother Alex Summers aka Havok. Don't be fooled by the cover featuring what's supposed to be a great brother versus brother fight because there's no such thing. What we get here is the exact opposite.

Now before you dismiss All New X-Men # 12 as something of a 'feels' book, there's still a couple of panels worth checking into thanks to the beautiful artwork rendered by Stuart Immonen.. There's even a dragon from the Iron Man books that's got thrown into the mix and even that looks lovely.

Call me sinister but I enjoy watching Mystique's new brotherhood with Lady Mastermind and Sabretooth doing their dirty deeds. It's probably got something to do with Immonen's art again. Plus there's wit in the dialogues that Reagan gives out. It's like she's the voice of (un)reason in all the bodies and explosions that Creed and Darkholm leaves. We're still left with the question regarding what Mystique intends to do with the money they keep stealing. That and the fact that is a throwback to Mike Carey's X-Men team in 'Supernovas'.

On the good guy's side, the best moments this issue provides is that 'reunion' Cyke and Alex has. The dialogue was nice on that part. The whole Jean Grey versus Scarlet Witch thing was also great, too bad they weren't allowed to go all-out.

Finally, this issue also addresses the absurdity of Uncanny Avengers or to be more specific the inconsistency of the writing for Captain America. In 'Uncanny' we see him as the guy that's allowing the mutant-human Avenger team to thrive. He doesn't give too much shit about what specie caused the problem, only that its a PROBLEM. Here however, we're seeing a Cap that's much too eager to pin the blame on Wolverine and his young wards. Bendis writes Steve like he's a massive dick with an even massive close-mindedness. That's something I really don't get behind. Or maybe it's just an ugly yet real perception of Captain America [not as a character but as a whole].

Overall, it's above standard but not SUPER IMPRESSIVE. Still worth your money though.

VERDICT: 8/10
