People Tend to Forget About Apollo and Midnighter

Marjorie Liu's Astonishing X-Men is currently making waves with the news of Northstar getting married to his non-mutant boyfriend Kyle. The media is calling this the first of its kind in the Marvel Universe. However, there are some news outfits that kind of spin the whole thing to make it look like its the first time two male characters / superheroes tie the knot. But I can certainly assure you this is NOT the first time two superpowered gay characters tie the knot.

Back in the early 2000s there was a small Wildstorm title called "The Authority" which featured comic's first mainstream super powered gay married couple in the form of Apollo and Midnighter.

In the series created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, the power couple represent the Batman and Superman archetype. One is the super powered being that literally gets his power from the sun while the other is just an enhanced human who loves to stalk his enemies in the dark.

In the pre-New 52 days and before the Wildstorm brand was shelved by DC Comics these guys went on grand adventures with their leader Jenny Sparks who was the living embodiment of the 20th Century. After Mark Millar's "The Nativity" storyline, the two also had an attachment to the infant Jenny Quantum whom they later adopt after getting married.

It was during The Nativity story arc that we see just how much Midnighter loves Apollo. When Apollo got raped by The Avengers-pastich group created by baddie Dr. Jacob Krigstein, Midnighter caught the bastard who led the assault on his husband and proceeded to use this...

I guess what irks me about the whole Astonishing X-Men Northstar Proposal is the fact that they forgot to mention about this little detail. They keep on calling this as the first when clearly its not.

Other than that I guess its pretty much okay. After all you have to factor in that this proposal/ gay wedding is actually being done within the X-Men plus the fact that it was released just in time with the United States government's talks and discussion about gay marriage in different states.

Oh and this also comes in a time when the LGBT community is seeking for more reforms and additional benefits.
