KICK-ASS 2 Review (Spoiler Heavy)

Here's my review for KICK-ASS 2 starring Aaron Taylor Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, Christopher Mintz Plasse and Jim Carey. It opens August 14 and is distributed locally by Solar-UIP.

So Kick-Ass 2 has finally reached our shores and I must say that it's definitely a great movie. Much like how Percy Jackson went with their own story, the same thing has happened here in Kick-Ass 2. Rather than sticking word for word from the source material, I could warrant around 80 percent was retained from the second volume of Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.'s seminal title.

Still Kick-Ass 2 is a pretty nifty flick. There's a good amount of teen angst plus bloody battles, out and out beatings and laughs here and there.

Kick-Ass 2

Rather than focus more on the life of Kick-Ass and his alter ego Dave Lizewski (played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson) this sequel focuses more on the life of Mindy McCreedy aka Hit-Girl (Chloe Grace Moretz). The angst is present there. Seeing those scenes was like sending me back to the time I first caught "Mean Girls" with a non coke snorting Lindsay Lohan.

It might seem like Johnson is doing anything but he's POV focuses more on the growing 'vigilante' trend that Kick-Ass inspired. Joining Lizewski on his 'quest' for Justice is a rag-tag team of vigilantes who call themselves "Justice Forever" led by Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey). Those segments were fun and all hero-y. Too bad though that it lasted only so long. Still the big 'final battle' gets us our kick for masked vigilantes and caped crusaders.

Kick-Ass 2

Massive props to Jim Carrey who seriously fit the role of the Colonel. Too bad though that his role is very, very short much like how Carrey's participation in promoting the film was short-lived.

Christopher Mintz-Plasse brought the laughs in this movie. His "Motherfucker" was spot on. Too bad though that his version of the character came off more as whiny rather than the motherfucking asshole that he really is from the source material.

Mintz-Plasse as THE MOTHERFUCKER
The great thing about KICK-ASS 2 is the fact that they deliberately took liberties on some places and scenes that might not be OK for the squemish. Some of them include the death of Colonel Stripes and the attack on Night Bitch. *The book portrayed the brutal rape of Kick-Ass' supposed girlfriend Katy as well as the violent shooting in the neighborhood* Those scenes would've unsettled viewers; hell I would get this unsettling feeling if I saw that adapted on the big screen.

Kick-Ass 2

The action and dialogue was great, a bit gritty and dirty but it's still great. What would you expect from a  movie entitled "KICK-ASS". Cool moments and a wicked, twisted finale as well. Oh and if you're looking for easter eggs, there's a buttload of them here in the film. Same goes for comic book references. And keep your eyes peeled for the next movie adaptation from Millar's KAPOW COMICS; it'll make an appearance and it's also going to feature one of our great comic book artists.

KICK-ASS 2 is now showing! Special thanks to SOLAR-UIP.

‘Chloë Grace Moretz’ Hit Girl is back in Kick-Ass 2

Kick-Ass wouldn’t be half the hero he is without Hit Girl, and no sequel would begin production without her in the mix. Imagined by Award winning writer Mark Millar as a tribute to his eldest daughter, Hit Girl has struck a chord with readers since her introduction and grown exponentially in popularity. The young woman who brought her to life, Chloë Grace Moretz, has been working up a storm—earning critical acclaim in such fare as Let Me In, as well as working with the likes of Martin Scorsese in Hugo and Tim Burton in Dark Shadows and soon to be seen starring opposite Julianne Moore as the title character in the remake of Carrie. Like her co-stars, she was thrilled to step back into her Kick-Ass role as Hit Girl, unfazed by the commotion caused by her appearance the first time around.

"The obvious difference is that I'm older now, and the difference between 11 and 15, which is how old I was when we finished, is that you're a different person, obviously," Executive Producer Neal H. Moretz reveals. "You're calculating more ideas, you're experiencing more things in your own life, you're not just living through other people's eyes, you're making your own decisions."

For the 2010 film, the now 16-year-old actress took the world by roundhouse kick with not only her acting abilities, but her phenomenal mastery of weaponry and martial arts. Indeed, Moretz didn’t know she was prescient when she joked at the premiere of the first film that she wanted to ride a purple Ducati: Hit Girl’s bike of choice in Kick-Ass 2. Laughs Moretz: “To get in the costume again and do all the stunts was pretty amazing. I’ve had such a great time reliving the character and bringing in more dimensions, while taking an older approach to the role. I liked seeing what I could play within the part.”

We meet a now-orphaned 9th grader in Kick-Ass 2, a girl who is more terrified of the treacherous girls in school than she ever was of the villains that she and Big Daddy took down. Moretz describes where we meet Mindy: “She’s skipping school, still being a vigilante and caring more about Hit Girl’s life than Mindy’s. Because she doesn’t have Big Daddy anymore, and Marcus is much more of a normal parent than Big Daddy, she starts to question herself. She promises Marcus she’ll stop being Hit Girl and begins to figure out her life a bit. The thing is…Mindy can’t really change.”

Mindy McCready's life also comes as a direct response to the previous one (also known as 2010's "Kick-Ass"), and that chapter doesn't read the same way this time around.

"Here's this little girl who is basically raised to be an assassin by this man who is insane," director Jeff Wadlow explains. "I mean, Big Daddy is treated like a hero in the first film, but in our film we even take a step back and say, no, he loves his daughter and that's a good thing, but he was totally crazy and he robbed her of any kind of normal life. We try to deal with that in a very real way."

"What Jeff and I really wanted to improve was the real heart of it," says Moretz. "Because I wanted to show that this girl didn't have a father anymore and how much that affected her. She's really confused and going through the self-torture of, 'Am I killing people because this is what I was raised to believe was a good thing, or am I just murdering people?'"

Kick-Ass 2

Moretz also promises that Hit-Girl's physicality will be different in the sequel, thanks to one big change: no guns. Well, mostly no guns.

"I wanted to show this darker side to her, and I also wanted to make the action a little bit different. So we basically scrapped the guns. I do use guns a little bit in the movie, but we basically do hand-to-hand combat and it's just a lot more hands-on."

Drawing on the source material, Director Jeff Wadlow and the producers were interested in exploring what happens when Mindy stops being Hit Girl and grapples with life and love as a high-school student. The director felt that no other performer but Moretz could possibly deliver that. He says: “There’s something incredibly special about Chloë that is hard to describe and quantify, but when you see her on screen you instantly understand. As a director, it was exciting for me to work with someone like her, because normally I like to dissect the character and intellectualize the story. Chloë just gets it immediately; she doesn’t need me to pontificate.”

Kick-Ass 2

Wadlow found that the usual manner of directing an actor wouldn’t work with Moretz. He proudly says: “Chloë understands how to create a moment in a way that you can’t teach or talk about it. She just does it, and she does it every take. It’s funny because we’d talk about a scene, about where I wanted it to go or how it fits into the larger story, and sometimes I’d wonder if what I was saying even made sense. But then we’d shoot it, and Chloë would deliver—take after take. I don’t think of her as a kid at all. I talk to her as a peer because she is so incredibly savvy and mature, but also willing to be goofy and not at all self-conscious. She’s just an amazing actress.”

Here's the Official KICK ASS 2 Synopsis

In case you live in a rock and you don't know that they decided to make a sequel/ adaptation-to-the-comic book sequel stilled based on a book by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.

SYNOPSIS: Kick-Ass, Hit Girl and Red Mist return for the follow-up to 2010’s irreverent global hit: Kick-Ass 2. After Kick-Ass’ (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) insane bravery inspires a new wave of self-made masked crusaders, led by the badass Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), our hero joins them on patrol. When these amateur superheroes are hunted down by Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse)—reborn as The Mother F%&*^r—only the blade-wielding Hit Girl (Chloe Grace Moretz) can prevent their annihilation. When we last saw junior assassin Hit Girl and young vigilante Kick-Ass, they were trying to live as normal teenagers Mindy and Dave. With graduation looming and uncertain what to do, Dave decides to start the world’s first superhero team with Mindy.

Unfortunately, when Mindy is busted for sneaking out as Hit Girl, she’s forced to retire—leaving her to navigate the terrifying world of high-school mean girls on her own. With no one left to turn to, Dave joins forces with Justice Forever, run by a born-again ex-mobster named Colonel Stars and Stripes. Just as they start to make a real difference on the streets, the world’s first super villain, The Mother F%&*^r, assembles his own evil league and puts a plan in motion to make Kick-Ass and Hit Girl pay for what they did to his dad. But there’s only one problem with his scheme: If you mess with one member of Justice Forever, you mess with them all.

"Kick-Ass 2" is released and distributed by United International Pictures through Solar Entertainment Corporation.

Kick Ass 3 # 1 Review

Reviewing Kick Ass 3 # 1 by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. in partnership with Comicx Hub.

So it's the final installment for Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.'s epic story of the ultimate underdog and it looks like it's really far from over for Dave Lizewski and his rag-tag 'superhero' team.

New Poster, Red Band Trailer and Images for Kick-Ass 2

A lot of cool stuff coming from "KICK-ASS 2" starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloe Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse together with Jim Carrey. The film is an adaptation of Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.'s "KICK-ASS 2" mini.

I was expecting a really grown up Chloe Moretz here in this new movie but it seems like that's not the case. I remember talking to Mark Millar about this and him telling me and the rest of the Flipgeek's crew that there are some liberties taken from the source material and the film adaptation including the challenge of Ms. Moretz 'growing up' during production and in between the two movies.

Anyway, regardless of that, watch the red band (meaning rated R) trailer for the KICK ASS 2 after the cut.

It's nice that they have Jim Carrey here but knowing what will happen to the guy in the middle makes me sad. Also, is it just me or is the violence tapered down. I kinda remember the cemetery scene to be more.... bloody.

Also I suddenly remember that there the Motherfucker and his gang of psychopaths did a shooting spree in Katie's neighborhood and did something horrible afterwards. Will that bit make it into the big screen adaptation?

Check out some of the cool images coming from the trailer as well:

Got my Jinri Experience and The Authority over the Weekend

Here are some of my hauls for this week - The Jinri Experience by my friend Jay Tablante and my super crush Jinri Park as well as a very hard to find copy of "The Authority" with FG bestfriend Mark Millar and Batman and Robin artist Frank Quitely.

Jinri-experience

I've been meaning to get The Jinri Experience but for some unknown reason the book is starting to disappear from the local convenience stores where it once proudly stood out. I've seen the insides and I can tell you guys that the photography was tastefully done and I'm not saying this because I know the photographer nor because I'm a fan of the celeb in question.

Action Comics # 12 Featured Similarities with Superman Red Son

I totally loved Action Comics # 12 as its a good throw back to Clark Kent while at the same time reintroduces classic Superman villains including Captain Comet and Mr. Mxyzptlk. But what I truly loved in this issue was the scene where Supes tries to save Lois Lane by speed studying all the medical books available in the hospital.

People Tend to Forget About Apollo and Midnighter

Marjorie Liu's Astonishing X-Men is currently making waves with the news of Northstar getting married to his non-mutant boyfriend Kyle. The media is calling this the first of its kind in the Marvel Universe. However, there are some news outfits that kind of spin the whole thing to make it look like its the first time two male characters / superheroes tie the knot. But I can certainly assure you this is NOT the first time two superpowered gay characters tie the knot.

Back in the early 2000s there was a small Wildstorm title called "The Authority" which featured comic's first mainstream super powered gay married couple in the form of Apollo and Midnighter.

In the series created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, the power couple represent the Batman and Superman archetype. One is the super powered being that literally gets his power from the sun while the other is just an enhanced human who loves to stalk his enemies in the dark.

In the pre-New 52 days and before the Wildstorm brand was shelved by DC Comics these guys went on grand adventures with their leader Jenny Sparks who was the living embodiment of the 20th Century. After Mark Millar's "The Nativity" storyline, the two also had an attachment to the infant Jenny Quantum whom they later adopt after getting married.

It was during The Nativity story arc that we see just how much Midnighter loves Apollo. When Apollo got raped by The Avengers-pastich group created by baddie Dr. Jacob Krigstein, Midnighter caught the bastard who led the assault on his husband and proceeded to use this...

I guess what irks me about the whole Astonishing X-Men Northstar Proposal is the fact that they forgot to mention about this little detail. They keep on calling this as the first when clearly its not.

Other than that I guess its pretty much okay. After all you have to factor in that this proposal/ gay wedding is actually being done within the X-Men plus the fact that it was released just in time with the United States government's talks and discussion about gay marriage in different states.

Oh and this also comes in a time when the LGBT community is seeking for more reforms and additional benefits.

American Pie: Reunion Opens in RP Cinemas on May 2

Welcome to the reunion of the Class of 1999 from East Great Falls High. In the comedy American Reunion, all the American Pie characters we met a little more than a decade ago return for their high-school reunion. In one long-overdue weekend, they will discover what has changed, who hasn’t and that time and distance can’t break the bonds of friendship.

It was summer 1999 when four small-town Michigan boys began a quest to lose their virginity. In the years that have passed, Jim (JASON BIGGS) and Michelle (ALYSON HANNIGAN) married while Kevin (THOMAS IAN NICHOLAS) and Vicky (TARA REID) said goodbye. Oz (CHRIS KLEIN) and Heather (MENA SUVARI) grew apart, but Finch (EDDIE KAY THOMAS) still longs for Stifler’s Mom (JENNIFER COOLIDGE). And Stifler (SEANN WILLIAM SCOTT) remains the same as he ever was. Now these lifelong friends have come home as adults to reminisce about—and get inspired by—the hormonal teens they were.

Completing the core group returning for the long-awaited American Reunion are comedy legend EUGENE LEVY as Jim’s Dad, NATASHA LYONNE as the sexually-wise Jessica, JOHN CHO and JUSTIN ISFELD as the world’s biggest MILF enthusiasts, CHRIS OWEN as The Shermanator and SHANNON ELIZABETH as Jim’s first on-screen tryst, Nadia.

They are joined by a supporting group of actors new to the series: DANIA RAMIREZ as Selena, the East Great Falls ugly duckling whom no one thought would become so gorgeous; KATRINA BOWDEN as Mia, Oz’s vapid model girlfriend; CHAD OCHOCINCO as himself, playing Oz’s on-air co-host; JAY HARRINGTON as Dr. Ron, Heather’s pompous cardiologist boyfriend; ALI COBRIN as Kara, Jim’s sexy next-door neighbor; and CHUCK HITTINGER as AJ, Kara’s idiot boyfriend.

“Amerian Pie: Reunion” is a Universal Pictures Presentation directed by Jon Hurwitz & Hayden Schlossberg and is distributed locally by United International Pictures through Solar Entertainment Corporation. Showing at your favorite theaters on May 2.

*** I love the fact that they even brought back Shannon Elizabeth to the fold.

If you're unfamiliar with Shannon Elizabeth, she made a "cameo" appearance in Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch's The Ultimates volume 1. In the story she was Tony Stark's girlfriend and even got to celebrate her birthday in outer space with the millionaire, playboy.

Took me the better part of an hour just to scour the Interwebs for this photo to prove to you guys that she really was in The Ultimates. Damn, Bryan Hitch can really draw awesome women when he wants to don't you think?
