Comic book review for Avengers # 8 by Jonathan Hickman and Dustin Weaver with Justin Ponsor.
In this issue we find out more about Earth 616's Starbrand. Plus some new troubles brewing in the foreground for Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
THE GOOD:
- Dustin Weaver and Justin Ponsor create such beautiful pictures in this issue. The two are definitely solid choices to do the art chores for this story arc. Also the art is pretty good that you don't really need to miss Jerome OpeƱa's art.
- Hickman weaves a massively amusing story. Not only does he infuse great character moments as well as some great teamwork for the group. Hickman also manages to provide a shot in the arm for the New Universe characters. Honestly I never thought that it would be possible for the Marvel Universe to really gel properly with the New Universe natives like Nightmask and Starbrand.
- The characterization of the new bearer of the Starbrand also gets in a few licks in terms of action. He's scared and confused and he manages to kick the Avengers' collective asses. Marvel is doing pretty well in reintroducing the character to old fans and formally introducing Starbrand to a whole new generation of readers.
- Hulk and Captain Marvel is awesome. Nuff said.
- Oh and if you think the whole debacle with Ex Nihilo is over, then you are sorely wrong...
THE BAD:
- My problem with the issue is that for new readers, despite all the information provided, it's still not really enough. There's a risk that new readers might go and find themselves scratching their heads. I'm looking at the kids here.
- Avengers # 8 also presents the problem of the Captain Universe entity leaving it's host. Whether or not we get to see more of this interesting character, we have to wait.
VERDICT:
Avengers # 8 is a rollicking ride and breeze through the reintroduction of the New Universe characters like Starbrand and Nightmask. It might not be everybody's cup of tea either due to Hickman's writing or because of these characters, still pretty good issue.
8/10
