LOVE BITE Review

LOVE BITE starring Ed Speelers and Jessica Szorh is one of those films that will probably make you go "Dafuq did I just see" but that's just the tip of the iceberg.

So basically the plot here is that there's a werewolf prowling the area of Rainmouth. It's M.O. though is different from other screen incarnations of the lycanthrope. You see this werewolf picks on virgins for lunch. Yeah, no matter how plump you are, it means jack-s**t for this wolf because he's looking for virgins. Turns out the central character is one and he falls hard for a mysterious woman (Szorh) who may or may not be the werewolf in question.

The film focuses on Jamie (Speelers) and his life in his quiant little hometown. He's never been laid before which makes him a potential target. Actually it's him and his mates...

The humor here in the film is hit-and-miss. One moment you're laughing and the next you find yourself muttering under your breathe "WALEY". And it's a constant tennis match on this end. IMHO there were some comedy bits that could've been better if not for the thick British accent in the film. Some are more stuff that'll be targeted specifically for Brits; us Pinoys would probably be just scratching our heads.

Jessica Szorh here is the true eye-candy. She plays the mysterious Julianna. I love the fact that Szorh really looks mysterious. Wait scratch that mysterious AND ravishing.

My one problem here with Szorh is that she rarely changes her clothes. I was like, what? Didn't they have a budget to buy her other clothes for the film? Seriously. Still those leather knee high boots are just awesome.

Timothy Spall (Peter Petigrew in Harry Potter)is also here as the crazy-as-hell werewolf hunter Sid who offers sage advice and a bit of lighter moments for the film.

If there's anything I truly enjoyed about Love Bite, it's the twist. The identity of the werewolf really did surprise me. Film was effective in making you doubt about the identity of the characters. Plus the clues were very scarce and very obvious. In hindsight, had I known that a specific moment in the film would determine the monster's identity, I'd have dropped this film. Good thing the film makers managed to keep things tight.

Here's how I'd assess the film. Slow start, ho-hum middle and a plot twist that'll make you cry wolf.

VERDICT: 6/10

Going back to my first quote for the film, it's a weird mix of horror and comedy.

Teens Wanted in Love Bite

A fresh twist on the definitive monster comedy movie, “Love Bite” is about to let loose its fangs to prey on the flesh of young and healthy teenage boys in the sleepy small town of Rainmouth. Starring Ed Speelers (“Eragon”) and Jessica Szohr (“Gossip Girl,” “The Internship”), “Love Bite” finds Jamie (Speelers) along with his teenage friends living in their putrescent seaside town looking for more opportunities to get laid. But in a town in which everyone knows everyone else, that’s easier said than done.

Things for Jamie have a habit of getting complicated. So when he meets Juliana (Szohr) – a smart, funny and absurdly beautiful girl from out of town – things quickly get, well, complicated. Jamie starts to believe that Juliana might be a werewolf since she arrived at the same time several of his mates started to disappear. All Jamie knows is that werewolves target virgins, which, he thinks, is probably the only reason she’s interested in him.

As the next full moon nears, relations with Jamie and Juliana start to hot up. By the time they are ready to make things physical, the huge round moon is peeping through the clouds. Before he can finally let the beast out of its cage, Jamie has to learn that it’s time to stretch his legs and get out of town for good.

For director Andy De Emmony, the attraction to the script was instant. “I come from a background as a sculptor, doing lots of animatronics and that sort of thing,” he explains. “And plus I've done a lot of comedy, so being able to bring those two together was really the appeal.” He collaborated with Cole to revise the script, he says. “From my point of view, the humor was there already, but it was important that we clarified the world we're in and established the rules of the werewolves.”

With an overabundance of werewolf stories on the market, De Emmony saw an opportunity to give the beast a comic motivation – it preys on virginity, the very thing this film's cast of hormonal teens are especially keen to lose. “I always think it's slightly grey, when you see werewolves in other things, what their agenda is,” De Emmony laughs. “The quest to lose your virginity is there in most teenage boys anyway, and they don't even have the pressure of a battle for survival!”

THE INTERNSHIP Review

Reviewing THE INTERNSHIP starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson from 20th Century Fox

Funny how under-appreciated this comedy flick starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson is considering the gag bits and real-world application it has. The plot is really simple. Two unemployed salesmen try to pull off the biggest prank by getting in on an internship program for Google. Both discover their strengths, revisit their weaknesses and wins the day for their team of outcasts. End of story.

While the plot is a bit dated and not to mention overly used, the film has a certain charm to it that can only be delivered by the same guys who brought us "Wedding Crashers" years ago. People in the US might not have enjoyed the flick but Pinoy sensibilities will definitely enjoy this one. From real life Quidditch matches to references to Game of Thrones and X-Men there's definitely something for every geek in the house.

The other cast members were pretty great as well. Much props however to Tobit Raphael who plays the role of Yo-Yo Santos, a very Pinoy 'Noogler' on Vaughn and Wilson's team. His was probably the meatier role with lots of funny moments. Pinoy pridist would even be waving the RP flag when they hear 'Ay Nako' get uttered somewhere in the movie.

There's also some great cameos here in the film one in the first half with Will Ferrell and the other one at the end of the film with Rob Riggle appearing at the tail end. However, its really Ferrell that gets going with some funny lines and an even funnier appearance in the film.

THE INTERNSHIP is far from perfect though. There are plotholes the size of Jupiter that either gets swept under the rug or is completely forgotten. Talk about major let down.

As a friend of mine stated while walking out of the cinema, the film is also one major advertorial for Google; showcasing the search engine company's existing (and non-existing) products and services. That for me is a double edged sword because it can also serve as a way of letting geeks like me strive to be one day get headhunted for Google. So that bit really depends on how you see things. Also I got a kick seeing Google's office in the big screen as opposed to the millions of photos appearing on the line.

In terms of eye candy, the film boasts of Rose Byrne (Moira McTaggert from X-Men First Class) as well as Jessica Szorh (the love interest in Pirahna 3D, yeah the girl that made out with the pornstars). Both are lovely but sadly they were just placed in to fill out certain niches. Nothing noteworthy.

Finally THE INTERNSHIP hit a heavy mark for this writer mainly because it's my dayjob to convince people to go digital; to embrace technology and the last few lines that Vaughn utters when sealing the winning deal is totally going to be quoted whenever I make sales pitches.

VERDICT: C+

Special thanks to 20th Century Fox. THE INTERNSHIP opens August 14.
