HANSEL AND GRETEL WITCH HUNTERS Movie Review

Just got back from the advance screening of Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters in 3D and I must say that it's certainly got some great qualities about it. The film stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as the titular siblings who are out making a living killing witches.

I have to admit that the movie is kinda cute. It's not an original idea but it definitely packs a meaner punch compared to it's predecessors such as "Van Helsing" and "Snow White and the Huntsman". Okay, maybe not so much Snow White but more Van Helsing.

The storytelling here is straightforward. There's no confusing plots in this action/adventure film.

I had my apprehensions when it came to this film. After all, Van Helsing burned so bad that even the mighty Hugh Jackman wasn't unable to really kick it off the ground. But surprisingly, "Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters" fared better in my honest opinion.

Hawkeye ain't got nothing on me

The creepiness factor in the film is downplayed here for most of the movie partly because it could be confusing if they had too many witches here. I'm applauding the studio's effort to make the film more understandable for the 21st century moviegoer. Although that gets thrown off the door the moment we see Hansel, Gretel and majority of the sheriff and his men start drawing their guns. Yes. Guns. Guns of all shapes and sizes.

The amount of babes in this flick is also substantially higher than normal. Famke Janssen's Muriel is a beautiful killer who also turns out to be a cold, hard, bitch.... I mean witch.

One won't help but think about Janssen's take on the X-Men member Jean Grey. She's deadly and dangerous and lovely all at the same time. Just don't let her change into this:

Gemma Arterton is another story entirely. What I like about her take as Gretel in this film is that she looks damn lovely despite getting her ass handed to her in some of the major fight scenes. She doesn't look fierce but I guess that's the best thing about her Gretel. She doesn't look rough or mean which makes her enemies underestimate her too much. The bad thing about Arterton's role is that it can be confusing. When we first meet her, she's the tough-as-nails action heroine capable and very much in control. Then towards the second half, she turned into the damsel-in-distress which plays out pretty much for the entirety of the movie.

Renner was typecast here as the typical action hero. He gets the girl, plays with high tech guns and weapons and even lands a couple of catchy one-liners. The character suits Renner here just don't expect so much from Hawkeye in this film. It's just really a one-dimensional character.

Interestingly enough, there are some real world scenarios that gets tackled in the flick albeit in small doses. Hansel for example suffers from an advance stage of the diabetes. This proves that the script wasn't weak. It's well-thought of and smart actually.

I loved the final, climatic scene where the dark witches are gathered in order to something vile and drastic. Its like the producers didn't bother to go and look at other pegs and just decided to stick with a Marilyn Manson video. Any random Manson video at that. The witches look terrible and creepy best of them all were the twin.

The twins took the goth rave party a little too far

Thematically the film is dark so please expect to see tons of gore and violence. The good thing about it is that it's not gratitious. It's enough to make you cringe but not enough to make you hurl or assault your sensibilities. Best moment here was the final moment which I shall not spoil. Although here's a bit of teaser regarding the said scene:

Some of the gore here are even dulled down IMHO. What might surprise you is the amount of female nudity. I do not know what the final rating will be but hey keep your eyes peered for Pihla Vitala.

The thing that confuses me here is where the movie is set. The setting was never cleared however it feels like the movie is set in the medieval ages but yet we keep on seeing guns popping out everywhere. So yes, its more guns and less crossbows which is very confusing and perplexing.

Cinematography in the movie is nice so as the sound mixing and scoring. The only thing out of place here was the rock track at the end of the movie. Plus, stick around for the credits as apparently there would be a surprise post-credit scene. We were unlucky to not see that though. Wonder what that could.

Overall Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters is a nice movie. An action-packed, popcorn flick at best. Nevermind the mechanics and other stuff and just focus on what's cool. Also it would be best to catch the movie in 3D and in IMAX, actually its best in IMAX especially if you want to see the 9 minute Star Trek Into Darkness  prologue/ teaser.

Special thanks to SOLAR ENTERTAINMENT for the very special invites.
