Things to Remember During Interviews - the Anne Hathaway - Ricky Lo Edition

Trending these day is this cringe worthy interview between Ricky Lo of the Philippine Star and Les Miserables star Anne Hathaway

It's painful to watch Lo do this interview and for a number of reasons.

- He keeps fumbling with his questions. If you edit out all the parts with Lo and then change the voice, you'll actually end up thinking that this was an experienced interviewer doing the interview. It's like the guy just stumbled into the room and was forced to do this one.

- For a guy thats been doing interviews with celebs for such a long time now, why can't he feel any awkwardness? I've had experience interviewing people before and depending on the 'popularity' level of the person, there are some no-go zones. Wasn't Ricky Low given some no-go zones?

- My god why does he even force down the whole 'Filipino Pride' thing? It's not Filipino Pride isn't outdated. In this scenario, its actually just ill-fitting. Here they are talking about a movie and you're sticking it with Pinoy Pride?

- Lea Salonga bit. I'm sure Lea wasn't aware that this interview is going to turn out the way it did. If you watch the video, you'll actually see that Lo kept on looking at his mobile (which is VERY, VERY RUDE). Lets assume that he was actually waiting for the reply which he later showed to Hathaway.

Don't know if this was a genuine swoon or this was sarcasm
- If you think about it, wasn't Lo doing this whole comparison between the two. Why even bring up the topic of Lea when you're in front of the most recent version of Fantine? Really, how you could you do that. At least Hathaway was still happy during those early moments.

- It's cool to hand her your phone to let her read but don't be a sanctimonious jerk about it. Oh and avoid being condescending.

After this, everything went straight to hell
- Stupid questions need to be filtered. You'll know that the interview is screwed the moment the subject of the interview corrects you or point out that you've already asked the question. C'mon man, where's your head. It seems like you're miles away. Or maybe it could be that Lo just spaced out because he's starting to realize how much blunders he's done. That or he's just getting old for this gig.

- Most importantly when doing an interview, try to keep your head straight and remember to focus. Not focusing will lead you to mistakes such as asking impertinent questions or even insulting questions. C'mon Ricky Lo, were you even thinking when you asked her about having experience with poverty or being poor. Yeesh.

Finally, I loved how Lo got burned when he asked Anne Hathaway to invite people to see her movie and she was like "why don't you invite them". BOOM!

Funny thing about this is when the video started to receive flak, they took it down. The next day comes an article from the Philippine Star entitled "5 Things You Can Do Instead of Watching Les Miserables". Call it bitterness or call it sourgraping but the fact remains that the timing was really bad in this one.

Anyway, let this edition be a lesson to young bloggers, journalists and hosts. May they avoid these traditional Pinoy interview cliches and may they become better at what they craft.

As for Ricky Lo, he should really take notes from this guy:
