Comedian Arvin "Tado" Jimenez Among the Dead in Bus Mishap

Sad to report that comedian Tado Jimenez was one of the casualties of a terrible bus mishap in the Mountain Province.

The actor was en route to attend one of his advocacies and projects PROJECT: LIFE BEGINS AT THE MOUNTAIN when the bus that he was on fell down a deep ravine. Yahoo adds that this was very ironic and I can see why.

I met the guy once, during the peak of their show Strangebrew (still showing at the time on UNTV)while waiting for an interview with a former ABS-CBN news anchor. We shared a couple of cigarettes, had a few laughs, he even gave us the reason why he was called 'Tado'.

Those few minutes with the guy said a lot about the man. He loves his kids and instilled a very deep sense of respect. His daughter in fact calls him "Ama" which is very, very deep.

Rest in Peace man.

Thermomix - Food Processing to the Next Level

Got invited to a nice product sampling of what looks to be the hottest in food processing technology today, Thermomix.

Also it's part of their celebration for the Chinese New Year so yeah.

IMG_0336

A brief intro: Thermomix is more than ten kitchen appliances in one compact unit. It makes food preparation easy, fun and very fast. What makes it different from any other food preparation appliance is that Thermomix also sautees, steams and cooks!

I was colored impressed with all the cool stuff that Thermomix has done in the span of two+ hours that we were in Vorwerk demo kitchen.

IMG_0308

In between sets, we were also viewing some demo stuff to show us why Thermomix is superior to other cooking implements.

IMG_0302

Side by side they were also cooking the very classic Pork Humba which, in all honesty, smelled really really good.

IMG_0329

The mantao that you're seeing together with the Humba was also created using Thermomix all done in a few minutes.

The aforementioned mantao also went great with the pancit, which was a staple food during Chinese New Year signifying long life and prosperity.

IMG_0310

I came in a bit late so I'm not entirely sure that the pancit was also prepared using Thermomix as well as the lemonade they served. Also kudos for the generous pork cuts that came along.

So, you know me, I'm always interested in food, that being said, I wanted to know more things about Thermomix and the demo I attended was a good way of sating my hunger... for food and knowledge.

IMG_0323

The design was of German descent so it's precise and ergonomic. Thermomix erases the need for doing a hundred different things to prepare a dish. Carrots can be grated and also get cooked as well as pasta; making this the perfect tool for pasta lovers.

Here's a closer look at the unit that was used during the demo.

It's actually the blades in the unit that cooks and stirs (as well as chops and purees stuff). Give it the right speed and it'll simply mix things inside like pasta.

Still not impressed? How about buying Thermomix for the sheer reason that you can make stuff like Lychee Mint Sorbet

7 Reasons Why We Need to Stop Tuning in to the Vhong Navarro Case

Can't let this issue slide but I certainly hate this. To be honest, I'm pretty sick of the whole Vhong Navarro -Deniece Cornejo - Cedric Lee story. It's drivel and utter garbage and people certainly have more things to do than tune in and watch what passes as 'news' trickle. It was good the first two days but with so many things happening, we really should stop this.

Credit: Examiner
1. It's veiled network war - ABS-CBN is defending Vhong's honor. I get that, it's part of their responsibility as an employer. They play the whole angle of Vhong being innocent while GMA pushes to pain Vhong as the evil, rapist out to get the 'purity' of one Ms. Deniece Cornejo. They throw news all day, countering each other's reports. It's definitely the network war in a whole new playing field and we're all stuck with it.

2. Politicians are riding in it now - Rather than focus on Napoles and her sordid activities with taxpayer money, politicians like Jinggoy Estrada and Bong Revilla are doing 'everything they can to bring justice to Vhong'. They want to ride on the popularity of this non-issue to divert attention from other matters.

3. Slut-shaming - I fucking hate people who have slut shamed a person they don't even know till like 40 minutes ago. We don't know what really happened so let's not throw stones at this supposed 'Mary Magdalene'. The way the comments thread on any news outlet flows, there's always bound to be a 'P.I.' or tarantado or even death threats. What if it's your little sister that got involved in this? You'd probably tear other people's hearts right?

Credit: Wheninmanila

4. Patronizing - That's one problem I have with society. We patronize people too much. We're all monsters, we all have a dark side and it's just not right to patronize ourselves TOO MUCH. Why the fuck was Vhong in the condo, meeting a girl privately despite the fact that he has a girlfriend. Ano to magbabahay-bahayan lang sila? The hashtag #justiceforvhong is just over the wall. seriously.

5. There's No Pay Off - standby a news or an issue if there's a payoff. Our first step towards peace in Mindanao has been achieved and yet we are all tuned in for the exclusive on the Vhong Navarro- Deniece Cornejo - Cedric Lee case. Once that's done, where does that leave us? Yolanda victims are still reeling from the disaster and yet here we are, moving on with our lives and making 'chismis' on a (and I cannot stress this enough) NON-ISSUE.

Also, we don't earn money from this and yet we spend so much time... even in social media.

6. It turns people into experts - just like how a Manny Pacquiao match can turn all of us into veteran sports analysts, this non-issue is turning the average Juan Dela Cruz into lawyers, detectives and medico legals. That's how absurd this is.

7. Reminder that the Rich Gets More - does it not hurt you that this is getting so much attention and yet other cases are scoffed? Yes that's right, it's because the ones involved are rich AND famous. We wouldn't even be batting an eyelash if it were some poor Juan or Juana in Tondo.

I know there's a whole lot more but I just don't want to completely ruin my day. Wake up people. Tune out and start talking about other things, you'll be happier if you do so.

That Sigbin Photo that is Circulating the Internet

There's a "kinda fake, taken from a movie" photo of what's supposedly a Sigbin circulating in forums all throughout the Internet lately.

The one above isn't the photo, that's probably from some local movie or from at one of the many "Shake, Rattle and Roll" movies Mother Lily has produced.

Here's the photo that's been going around the Internet though.

Like I said, it spells faked/shopped/hoax so no need to call that out. A sigbin is described as:

"The Sigbin or Sigben is a creature in Philippine mythology said to come out at night to suck the blood of victims from their shadows. It is said to walk backwards with its head lowered between its hind legs, and to have the ability to become invisible to other creatures, especially humans. It resembles a hornless goat, but has very large ears which it can clap like a pair of hands and a long, flexible tail that can be used as a whip.[1] The Sigbin is said to emit a nauseating odor.

It is believed to issue forth from its lair during Holy Week, looking for children that it will kill for their hearts, which it fashions into amulets."

Sounds scary AND interesting. I just can't see how it could actually kill it's victim but I do not have any intention of finding out. Remember this guy from "Cabin in the Woods" and his fixation with the Merman?

This is truly a case for Alexandra Trese.

RUMOR: Noon-time Show Celebrity Getting Hitched in April

BLIND ITEM/ RUMOR TIME dear readers!

There's a certain somebody from a noon-time show that will be getting married come April 2014. My sources say that it's a hush-hush thing between the host/hostess. He/she and his/her boyfriend/girlfriend haven't been formally engaged which fuels the speculation as to why they are getting married.

The less I say the better. Let's go and grab some popcorn.gif come April and see how this pans out.

A little bit of information on the venue... It's in the south; so go take your pick between Laguna, Cavite or Batangas.

XOXO

This Poledancing GIF Will Change Your Mind

I'm a guy and while it's inexcusable to have a negative (and dirty) connotation about pole dancing I always try to look at it with respect. Because women should be treated with respect and because it's how I was brought up. Saw this gif on Tumblr today and it completely sealed the deal on how I look at poledancing.

She's practically moving and dancing in the pole. Now excuse me while I pick up my jaw from floor.

The Official List of Philippine Holidays for 2014

Au Revoir 2013! And since we're facing a brand new year, here's the official list of Philippine Holidays so you can chart your trips and file your vacation leaves.

credits: Manila Bulletin

Attrition given to the Manila Bulletin for coming up with this chart. If you're worrying about the lackadaisical number of holidays, there are several other dates that are still floating. I work in Pasig, so I'm also including "Araw ng Pasig". There's also the celebration of Ramadan (the opening and the closing of Ramadan AFAIK).

Cheer up and have a Happy New Year.

5 Possible Comebacks for "Ang Taba Mo"

I read this article on Rappler and while I think Ms. Shakira Sison did an awesome job, her essay / article just didn't give more tips to answer the remark "Ang Taba Mo". So here I am, inspired by what I read, doing an essay on my own on how to comeback from a remark like that.

*You could say I'm a subject matter expert when it comes to this situations*
** Rather than post pics, let's go with food porn shall we?**

fried cheese sandwich

So first, a prologue, ANG TABA MO isn't where it ends. That spiral arrow of truth can come in different flavors and variants. There's the standard which is a remark, no physical changes, just saying that your fat. ANG TABA MO LALO is where it hurts. All those man or woman hours in the gym did not do squat and that vegan diet you've taken up isn't helping you (the animals maybe, but not you).

There's also the more concealed "LUMULUSOG TAYO AH". which sounds different but still feels like you're being stabbed by Machete's favorite weapon. NAPABAYAAN KA YATA SA KUSINA - hurts like hell.

POSSIBLE COMEBACKS

1. "Thank you. Masarap kumain eh"

It's polite and concise and you're telling the truth. Add a smile to this to look like a saint despite the fact that you feel like you want to pull out a grenade and send yourself and that other person to fitness heaven.

2. "Weh?"

Bacon... in hi-res

It's a sign that you're in denial and candid about it. The payoff comes off on how you deliver "weh". A weh with a guttural snarl means that you're hurt and playing it cool. A "weh di nga" is exasperation and disbelief. A sarcastic "weh" might just be the middle ground for this.

3. "Ang _________ mo naman"

I have no words for this. nor a witty caption.
Depending on the situation, you can fill in the blanks with a different adjective. If its a relative make them feel good by saying they look young or fresh. If it's a feeling-close colleague in the office, deal moderate damage and if it's your hated enemy, try something heavier, something that will make them want to skip breakfast.and lunch. and possible medya noche. You can even tell the truth. If payat, then say it, fight fire with fire or at least fight brutal honesty with brutal honesty.

4. "Ikaw din"

Goose liver and pancakes

Boomerang the comment right back at them and see yourself enter an awkward situation. It's a bit of suicide run but at least you'll never hear them blurt that out again. You might even have them questioning themselves. Bonus points if you see them look at the mirror trying to see if your words ring true.

5. "Ganun talaga e"

Pork Knees
Acceptance is better than shrugging it off. The years will add pounds and flab. By saying ganun talaga its like saying nature has run it's course and you have embraced that idea. Two additional things for this, you either walk away from person or you add something, anything. You can say that you're still heading to the gym or that you're doing boxing or yoga or training to powerlift. Just be honest.

This one is called THOR. Seriously

That's it. All that food porn that went along with this post just made me hungry. Have a happy holiday ahead of you dear reader.

11 Celebs and Characters No Longer Allowed in Malls

Here's a rundown of people and pop culture characters that are no longer allowed to enter SM Malls. And they certainly can't buy replacement hammers anymore in the malls since authorities are STUPID enough to actually prohibit selling hammers inside department stores here in Manila.

1. MC Hammer

Sure 'hammer's not living here in the PH but that doesn't mean he can't be banned from entering malls particularly SM Supermalls. So maybe the next time he tries to enter, the guards be like 'STOP!.... Hammer time'.

2. Armie Hammer

The Lone Ranger star won't appreciate all the hate.

3. KIRBY

Poor Kirby...

4. GRAY FULLBUSTER (Fairy Tale)

No matter how powerful his ice-make magic is, it's no match for the power of Henry Sy and the DILG.

5. LAVI (D Grayman)

Definitely not getting in thanks to his giant hammer.

6. ZAPPA and LEAH (Chrono Cross & Chrono Trigger)

The two classic characters won't be entering anytime soon especially Zappa who fits the stereotypical description of 'goons' in Pinoy setting.

7. HARLEY QUINN

Definitely. Add to the fact that she's still madly in love with The Joker.

8. FIX-IT FELIX JR.

Whenever he's there, you can bank on Wreck-it Ralph to be somewhere near.

9. THRALL

Even the leader of the free Orcs from Warcraft III and WOW won't be of any use. He could try to fry the guards with the chain lightning spell.

10. RONAN THE ACCUSER

We've seen how he manhandles opponents in Annihilation and Infinity so breaking glass is a piece of cake.

11. THOR, BETA RAY BILL and THUNDERSTRIKE

The most powerful Avenger and his allies all brandish hammers. Not a good idea.

So yeah, if these guys are going to play the blame game, they should probably blame the martilyo gang (english: Hammer Gang) for their brash heist of SM North Edsa last Sunday.
